BAF has been using the country’s multipurpose sports arena Bangabandhu National Stadium (BNS) in Dhaka as their home venue for a long time but recently hesitating to use it due to its poor conditions.
BAF general secretary Advocate Abdur Rakib Montu said that the stadium is inappropriate for hosting any competition.
“The track and field of the BNS is too poor. We can’t host any event here. We need high-quality track and field before arranging any events for Mujib Barsha,” said Montu.
“The track and field is inappropriate. If we arrange competitions here, our athletes will certainly be injured. Even, we don’t have a gymnasium for athletes. We actually don’t know that how we will arrange international competitions next year,” the GS added.
The BAF has decided to arrange a national level athletics competition and an international competition seven nation Bangabandhu SAFF Junior (Under-20) Competition in November 2020 marking the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Ahead of the two meets, BAF is going to arrange the 43rd Mayor Chattogram National Athletics Competition on January 16-18 at the MA Aziz Stadium in the port city Chattogram.
About the national athletics, Montu said “We have decided to arrange the national athletics competition in Chattogram for two reasons. The first reason is to find out grassroots athletes and second is the unsuitability of BNS. I believe, if we arrange division-wise events, we will get out grassroots athletes,” Montu further said.
