At least five people were killed and 12 others remained trapped after a landslide struck northwestern China's Gansu province on Tuesday, according to state media.
The landslide occurred shortly before 7 a.m. in Nanhe township of Longnan city, burying 33 people, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.
Rescue teams pulled several people from the debris, but efforts were continuing to reach those still trapped.
The cause of the landslide was not immediately known.
Images broadcast by state-run CCTV showed excavators and rescue workers searching through large piles of earth in a heavily forested area under clear skies.
Authorities evacuated nearby residents as rescue operations continued.
