Those suffered bullet wounds were identified as Ahsan Bepari, Shahid Bepari, Jahid Hasan alias Ruku Dewan, Shahporan and Abu Taher. Of them, two were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the capital in a critical condition.
Locals said Shah Alam Member and Sabuj Dewan have long been at loggerheads over establishing their control in the locality.
As a sequel of their enmity, supporters of Shah Alam launched an attack on their rivals around 11:30am, triggering a clash, said locals.
At least 20 gunshots were fired and several crude bombs exploded during the melee that left 22 people injured, they said.
Over 50 establishments, including a ward Awami League officer, were also ransacked during the clash.
On information, police rushed in and brought the situation under control around 12:30pm.
They arrested five people and recovered nine crude bombs from the spot, said officer-in-charge of Gazaria Police Station Harunur Rashid.
Locals said the two groups had also locked into clashes in the past.
