They made the remark at a discussion organised by Bangabandhu Parishad at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital.
On January 10, 1972, Bangabandhu returned to independent and sovereign Bangladesh after more than nine months of captivity in Pakistan jails.
Former Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Dhaka University (DU) Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique said Bangabandhu wanted to build a corruption free Bangladesh but he could not fulfill his dream.
“Bangabandhu took various initiatives to stop all kind of corruption but sadly the dream could not be fulfilled yet. Now his daughter and our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took ‘zero-tolerance’ initiatives against corruption to make a corruption-free Bangladesh,” he said.
Bangladesh Economic Association President Professor Abul Barkat said Bangabandhu was a great politician and philosopher.
“Bangabandhus’s homecoming strengthened the foundation of the country’s independence,” he said.
DU Prof Dr Syed Anwar Husain said, “We perhaps wouldn’t have gotten an independent country if Bangabandhu had not been born. Today’s Bangladesh is a result of the lifelong struggle of Bangabandhu.”
The organisation’s General Secretary Dr SA Malek presided over the function and its central leader Matiur Rahman Laltu moderated it while Barisal University VC Professor Dr Md Sadequl Arefin (Arefin Matin), DU Prof Dr AJM Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan, among others, were present there.
