Police have arrested Hefazat-e-Islam Brahmanbaria district committee joint general secretary Mufti Abdur Rahim Qasemi in connection with a case over violence in the district.
He was arrested from the Vadughar area of the district on Tuesday afternoon.
He was a former teacher of Jamia Yunusiya Madrasa.
District additional superintendent of police (administration and crime) Raich Uddin said that on secret tip, a team of district police raided the Vadughar area and arrested him.
Abdur Rahim Kasemi's involvement in the Hefazat violence was identified through an investigation, he added.
Kasemi resigned from Hefazat-e-Islam on April 23 in protest of sabotage, seeking fair trial of those involved in violence.
In a written statement sent to reporters on the same day, Kasemi said that the extreme chaos created by Hefazat-e-Islam across the country over the arrival of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was inhumane. The loss of life and property of the country cannot be an Islamic act by any means.
Kasemi demanded the government identify and bring to justice those who were involved with it.
