The said project was implemented by Start Fund Bangladesh with support from CARE Bangladesh and UKAID in collaboration with the Center for Environment and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS), a public trust under the Ministry of Water Resources, said a press release. 

Director General of the Department of Disaster Management Atiqul Huq said distress of the affected community due to erosion can be reduced in two ways. “One is the structural intervention and the other is early warning and response.”

He noted that the Department of Disaster Management is interested to work collaboratively with relevant organisations to mainstream early warning and early action protocols of riverbank erosion.

This is the first time in Bangladesh, early warning of erosion was used to support a community people living in the risk-prone zone before the erosion took place. 

CARE Bangladesh Deputy Country Director Prabodh Devkota said more investment is necessary for utilizing the tech-based solutions to take early action against disasters. 

As per the project deliverables, the erosion risk areas were demarcated on the ground by raising river erosion warning markers and provided 430 households with cash support to relocate their houses in collaboration with their Union Disaster Management Committee and Upazila Disaster Management Committee.

This project also supported four schools for repairing and strengthening structures by earthwork and retention walls.
