Brac, an international development organisation, is going to provide emergency aid to some 7,250 expatriates who lost their jobs and had to return home empty-handed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Secretary of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry Dr Ahmed Munirus Salehin inaugurated the initiative through a virtual programme on Thursday afternoon.
Brac officials of grassroots level along with local district and upazila administration will form a list of the expatriates and send them the money through bKash after necessary vetting, said a press release.
Already Brac has distributed Tk 61.8 lakh among 1,545 expatriates and is scrutinizing 5,705 others.
Expatriates who mainly returned from Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Malaysia, Libya, Europe and elsewhere were getting the aid.
The organization has plans to spend Tk 100 crore for psychological help, skills training, and economic rehabilitation of the foreign return workers over the next three years.
Shariful Hasan, Chief of Brac Migration Programme presented the key features of the programme and said “We believe that fighting this crisis moment is the duty of government only, we have to do it jointly.”
