Railways Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan on Friday said direct train service on Dhaka-Siliguri route will begin in June after installation of the Chilahati-Haldibari rail track.
“It’ll be completed by June and Dhaka-Siliguri train service will be launched immediately after that,” he said while distributing donations among the poor at Moidandighi in Boda upazila.
Currently, two trains – Maitree Express on Dhaka-Kolkata route and Bandhan Express on Khulna-Kolkata route – are being operated between Bangladesh and India.
The government has long been working to ensure stronger rail communication inside the country and with neighbouring India.
Minister Sujan revealed that the government is all set to inaugurate construction of Bangabandhu Railway Bridge on the Jamuna River on March 14.
