The victim was identified as Delwar Hossain, a worker of Easy Garment of Paschim Hajipara.
Md Hafiz Al Faruq, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Tejgaon Zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said neighbours informed the garment owner around 3:30am that someone was throwing clothes and other items out of a seven-storey building through a window.
“After finding Delwar in the garment factory around 8am, security guards, other staff and representatives of the garment owner tortured him,” he added.
On information, police rescued Delwar and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 11:30am where doctors declared him dead around 12:30pm, the ADC said.
As the death news spread around, fellow workers got furious and put up barricades on the Malibagh-Kuril road around 2:40pm, demanding justice for the victim.
They removed the blockade around 4:30pm upon assurance from police to take action against the killers of Delwar, Hafiz added.
He further said police detained 10 people, including the factory owner, security guards and staff, for interrogation.
Annisur Rahman, DMP Deputy Commissioner (Tejgaon Division), said Delwar was tortured by the hired men of the garment owner in his presence.
