“Awami League is presenting distorted history before the new generation by depriving them of knowing the facts in a planned way,” he told a discussion organized by BNP to observe 7th March, the day of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s famous speech in 1971.

Aware of the attention drawn by his party’s decision to observe the day, the BNP leader sought to explain the move saying, “We want to fairly depict the fact about who did what for the independence of this country, who sacrificed lives and blood, organized the people and struggled for it (independence). They (AL) are giving a perception that only one party, one man and one group brought everything for the country--independence, development and rights of the people. They’re misleading the new generation with false history.”

BNP National Committee on Celebrating the Golden Jubilee of Independence arranged the discussion at the Jatiya Press Club marking the historic day.

He said the entire population of this country had resisted the discriminatory thoughts and position of Pakistanis and their initiative to completely exploit the people of Bangladesh.

“Our students had sacrificed a lot during the 1952 Language Movement. Similarly, the students and young people joined the Liberation War and sacrificed their fresh blood to achieve independence of the country and establish their rights and build a democratic country,” said Fakhrul, pointing out that the AL leaders never utter the name of AL founding president Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani.  

He also said the ruling party fail to mention the name of MAG Osmani even once, who was the Commander-in-Chief of the Bangladesh Forces during the Liberation War, or the name of Tajuddin Ahmad, who led the government in exile, he added.

“They’re very narrowminded. They’re so dangerous that they want to impose false history on the people of this country only for their personal interest and hanging onto power,” said the BNP leader.

Convener of the committee Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said their party did not arrange the discussion to belittle or magnify anyone or distort the history. “We’ve rather arranged this discussion to narrate the real history before the country’s people,” he said.

BNP standing committee members Mirza Abbas, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Selima Rahman also spoke at the discussion conducted by BNP leader Abdus Salam.
