Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir came up with the announcement at a press conference after a meeting of BNP standing committee members at its chairperson’s Gulshan office on Saturday night.
He said they formed a 21-member election steering committee for the two city corporations each.
The BNP leader said Mosharraf was made convener of party’s Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election steering committee while party standing committee members Mirza Abbas and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku will act as its coordinators.
Fakhrul said Moudud was made convener of the party’s Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) election steering committee. BNP standing committee members Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Selima Rahman were made its coordinators.
Besides, he said, they will send letters to the Election Commission (EC), the IGP and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner seeking their cooperation in holding fair and credible elections in the two cities on January 30.
The BNP leader said their meeting discussed the issue of the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the polls. “We’ve rejected EVMs and we won’t accept the voting through the EVMs.”
He said they will work out action programmes to mobilise public opinions against the EVM use in the elections.
As BNP is a democratic party, he said, it is participating in the city polls under an ‘incompetent’ Election Commission.
In the letter their party is going to send to the EC, Fakhrul said, they will place their demands and proposals to hold the city polls in a credible manner.
