In Bagharpara upazila of the district, they all are very happy as the production look very good along with fair market prices.
People from different parts of the country, including Dhaka, Khulna, Jashore, Barishal, Bagerhat, Kushtia, Chuadanga, Jhenaidah and Magura are crowding Baghrapara markets to buy sugarcane, well-known for its high quality.
More importantly, traders said, they can transport it to their destinations easily unlike previous times as there is no troublemaker on roads.
According to the District Agriculture Extension (DAE), the farmers in the upazila are harvesting a very good yield this time compared to previous years for selection of high-yielding variety, favourable weather and less insect attack.
Ahmed Ali, a sub-assistant agriculture officer, said this year 120 hectares of land brought under sugarcane cultivation at Bagharpara which was 80 hectares last year.
Sugarcane are grown in large quantity at Shukdebnagar, Chhaibaria, Nauapara, Khalshi, Bahrampur and Indra villages under Dohakula union while a limited quantity is cultivated in Datpur and Karimpur of Jamdia union; Habulla, Mohiron, Laxmipur and Narkelbaria under Dorajhat union, and Raipur unions.
Abul Kalam, a sugarcane grower of Dohakula village, said, “I’ve cultivated sugarcane on 33 decimals of land spending Tk 50,000. Now I hope it’ll help me earn Tk 1.5 lakh due to its good production.”
Mabinul, another farmer of Shukdebnagar village, said the sugarcane growers were deprived of fair price in the last few years but this time it looks much better.
Zahidul Alam, Upazila Agriculture officer, said agriculture officers are regularly visiting fields and providing necessary suggestions to the farmers.
