At least one person was killed and several hundreds were injured in violent clashes across the country as leaders and activists of Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) took to the streets across the country in a show of force ahead of the next general election. A young man was killed and 50 people were injured in sporadic clashes between leaders and activists of BNP and Awami League in Laxmipur district town on Tuesday. According to Mahfuzzaman Ashraf, superintendent of Laxmipur police, both BNP and Awami League brought out processions across the city.  Also read: Not a victory march, it’s a defeat march: Quader on BNP’s program  At 4 pm, the procession of BNP and Awami League mingled at Samad Academy intersection. At one stage, the BNP men tore down banners of Awami League, triggering a chase and counter chase. The BNP men, numbering 30/40, chased some 15/20 men of Awami League, forcing them to take shelter in a building inside Madin Ullah Housing. Sajib of Chandraganj was found lying on the ground floor of the building, and he died due to profuse bleeding, police said quoting locals. As part of their one-point movement, BNP started a march towards Old Dhaka from Gabtoli Bus Station around 11:20 am. Also read: 50 injured in AL, BNP, police clash in Feni When the march reached near the college in Mirpur around 11:45 am, some youths attacked them, resulting in a clash, witnesses said.  

More than 1,300 people have been booked in connection with Tuesday’s violent clashes between Dhaka College students and New Market traders that claimed two lives. Of a total of three cases filed in connection with the clashes, Yeamin Kabir, inspector (investigation) of New Market Police Station lodged an FIR against 24 identified people and 900 unidentified students and traders. Also read: New Market clashes: Another dies of injuries at Dhaka hospital Charges were pressed against them for carrying out attacks on police that left some of the cops injured, officials said. Another FIR was lodged at the same police station on a complaint from sub-Inspector Mehedi Hasan for obstructing cops from discharging their duties and vandalism. As many as 200 unidentified people were made accused in this case. Meanwhile, Syed, uncle of the slain delivery man of a courier service, Nahid Hossain, lodged a complaint with the New Market police in connection with the death of his nephew during the clashes. Police registered an FIR against 150-200 people after receiving the complaint. Two people were killed during the violent clashes between Dhaka College students and New Market traders on Tuesday. Of the deceased, Mursalin, 26, who worked at a clothing store in New Market died on Thursday at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), inspector Bachchu Mia, in charge of the local police outpost, said. On Tuesday night, Nahid, 20, who was not involved but simply happened to be in the vicinity during the clashes died during treatment at DMCH. DMCH resident doctor Md Alauddin said that Nahid was put on life support and died around 9.40 pm on that day. More than 30 people, including journalists and students, were injured as the students of Dhaka College clashed with the traders of New Market at the Nilkhet intersection around midnight on Monday.  Of the injured, some 24 people were initially admitted to DMCH, UNB has learnt. The whole area turned into a battleground after a fresh clash erupted between them around 10am on Tuesday, as a sequel to Monday midnight's tensions, according to witnesses. Also read: First death reported in New Market-Dhaka College clash Brick chips and crude bombs were thrown during the chase and counter-chase between the two groups while police lobbed tear gas shells to bring the situation under control. Around midnight on Monday, the clash ensued between the traders and college students, with the latter alleging that a few of their peers were thrashed and stabbed by a couple of shopkeepers when they had gone to the market for shopping. Shopkeepers, however, alleged that the students were beaten up as they had refused to foot the bill at an eatery.
