Uber Driver Account in Bangladesh: How to Activate, Delete, and Reactivate
As traditional employment models have been changing, many individuals are turning to innovative platforms like Uber to secure their financial future. Prerequisites for Activating an Uber Driver Account
Prospective Uber drivers have the opportunity to join the platform without the necessity of owning a motorbike or car. However, adherence to ride-sharing regulations is crucial, varying country-wise. For instance, in Bangladesh's perspective, it includes obtaining a ride-sharing enlistment certificate from the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA). The certificate can be acquired by the vehicle owner and through Uber's company for those who do not own a vehicle.
Additionally, there is a universal requirement for all Uber drivers in Bangladesh to meet the minimum age criterion of 18 years, as established by the BRTA for driver's licenses.

Documents Required to Activate Uber Driver Account
For the Driver
- An identity card containing the driver's personal information.
- A profile photograph that adheres to specific guidelines: it must be a well-lit image without glasses, focusing on the driver's full face and top of shoulders. This photo should solely feature the driver's face without the inclusion of a driving license image or any other printed photograph.
- A National Identity Card (NID)
- A valid driving license.

For the Vehicle (Motorbike/Car)
- Registration form
- Fitness certificate
- Tax token
- Insurance certificate.
If the applicant does not own a vehicle, only the following documents are required:

Application Process for BRTA Ride-Sharing Enrollment
Registering the BRTA Service Portal
- Initiate the process by visiting the BRTA Service Portal (https://bsp.brta.gov.bd/register).
- Click on the 'Register' option and verify the email address. Verification involves receiving a confirmation message in the email and an OTP on the mobile number.
- Once verified, log in using the email address or mobile number and password.Access the profile by clicking on the image on the dashboard and complete all required information.

Does Uber in Bangladesh offer hassle-free service?
Riddled with complaints of harassment and inconvenience from commuters, ride-sharing service Uber in Bangladesh is taking a hit in terms of reputation.
Issues like failure to pick up passengers in time, transferring ride requests from passengers to other drivers, multiple cancellations of rides, exorbitant fares and not accepting bKash payments are forcing many regular users to abandon it.
On September 16, this correspondent called for an Uber ride to go from Baridhara J Block to Badda. The trip got cancelled three times, and Uber charged Tk 30 from the bKash account without providing any service.

Jannatul Begum, who works at a private company, had to go through the same ordeal last month. One morning, she called for an Uber ride to go from Bashundhara to Paltan. Her trip got cancelled twice. The first driver had accepted her ride request but informed 30 minutes later that the trip has been cancelled due to gas shortage.
The first driver then transferred Jannatul’s ride request to a second driver, who, after taking 20 minutes, informed her that he too won’t be able to make the ride. The office-goer then had to take a CNG-run three-wheeler.
“I would’ve managed some other vehicle had I known that my trip will be cancelled after confirmation. Besides, fare of an Uber trip from Bashundhara to Baitul Mukarram in Paltan is around Tk 800-900, which is very high compared to other types of rides. That’s why I’ve stopped using Uber,” Jannatul said.

Mehedi Hasan had been a regular user of Uber before he stopped. While talking to UNB, he discussed some issues which are behind the gradual decline of the ride-sharing service.
“Nowadays, passengers can’t find Uber rides when needed. Drivers also don’t want to make the trip if they don’t like the destination. Fares have also gone up, and many drivers are unwilling to accept bKash payments though Uber has added that as an option,” Mehedi said.
Asked about these issues, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Chairman Nur Mohammad Majumder told UNB that they will look into the complaints made against Uber and take legal steps if any passenger is found to have been harassed.

“We had permitted Uber to operate here with a view to ease the commuting issues. In order to keep its operations running, Uber has to provide services considering the best interests of the passengers. There are certain conditions that Uber has to follow, and one of them is preventing harassment of passengers at any cost,” said Nur.
About high fares, the BRTA chairman added that another condition that Uber must follow is to keep the fare reasonable.
“Uber has to set the fares considering the present situation. We’ll definitely fine Uber if we receive complaints of charging excessive fares,” Nur added.

Contacted by UNB through its public relations agency in Bangladesh, Benchmark PR, Uber acknowledged the issues.
“Long waits and driver cancelling trips fall short of our promise to deliver a magical experience to riders. We are working hard to address this and have launched a slew of new features for driver partners,” it said.
It further said, “To remove frustration for riders and drivers alike, we now show trip destinations to drivers upfront before they decide to accept the ride. We are also showing drivers the mode of payment (cash or online) before the trip starts. In case of any concerns while using our platform, we also encourage our users to raise complaints through the app for timely and efficient resolution.”

Uber to provide 50,000 free rides for Covid vaccine seekers in Dhaka
Uber Wednesday announced that it will provide 50,000 free rides – worth Tk1 crore – for people travelling to and from vaccination centres in Dhaka.
The initiative is a part of Uber's global commitment to provide 10 million free or discounted rides to ensure efficient and equitable access to vaccines.
"We are privileged to be able to support the Bangladesh government's tireless efforts to ensure every citizen in the country is vaccinated. Safety has always been a priority at Uber, and we are determined to offer our assistance to the local authorities in their efforts to battle Covid-19 across the cities we serve," Prabhjeet Singh, president of Uber South Asia, said.
"Mass vaccination is the key to overcoming this pandemic, and we are committed to providing safer and timely transport options for people travelling to vaccination centres. This, in turn, will help communities to recover quickly from the pandemic and rebuild their lives," he added.

Uber Adds Auto-Rickshaws in Dhaka: Transportation Aggregation and Competition
When it comes to ride-sharing platforms, Uber is perhaps the largest service provider in the world. Founded in 2009 in San Francisco, California, the platform has grown to become a multinational mobility driver in over 80 countries of the world. However, the growth and popularity of Uber have always been challenged by local competitors and the scenario has somewhat been similar in Bangladesh as well. To combat that, Uber has always tried to come up with innovative strategies and services to outperform their competitors and their latest addition of auto-rickshaws is a testament to that end.
State of Mobility in Bangladesh
Transportation has always been one of the prime constraints in Bangladesh. whether it’s the lack of infrastructures or plain ignorance of people, there aren’t many that can say that they haven’t faced the ugly side of Dhaka’s traffic. So naturally, the concept of ride-sharing has been a relief for many, especially those in a rush. A simple estimate is enough to prove our point. The total number of users of the ride-sharing platform in 2016 was about 10,000. Within just one year, the number jumped to 500,000 in 2017. Now in 2021, there are about 7.5 million rides completed every month with a market cap of about 2200 crore BDT. It only proves that the market is highly lucrative with even more growth opportunities.

The Competitors
The main competitors in the ride-sharing platform of Bangladesh are Uber, Pathao, Shohoz, and Obhai. There are other utility-based mobility services but those are mostly service niche-based so we won't be including them in the general transportations segment.
As the earliest adopter of the ride-sharing concept in Bangladesh, Pathao has been a market leader since 2015. Soon after, Uber entered Bangladesh in 2016. The other two prominent competitors entered the ride-sharing market in early 2018 even though Shohoz was founded back in 2014.
The Competitive Landscape
It's clear that Uber isn’t the first and neither the only company in the mobility business of Bangladesh. With three other prominent competitors around, the work for Uber is cut out to be much more than they faced in some other markets of the world.

One of the prime reasons for a competitive landscape is the multipoint service offered by the competitors of Uber. Pathao and Shohoz both have an all-in-one super app that provides a host of other services in addition to mobility. Naturally, the appeal of Pathao and Shohoz holds higher ground given the solutions and value created and offered.
However, the strategy of Uber also goes neck and neck. The ultimate goal of Uber is to be the gold standard in the transportation sector in each of their market. Dara Khosrowshahi, the CEO of Uber, even went so much as to say that they plan to develop Uber as the Amazon of the transportation sector. So how is Uber faring compared to that goal?
Unlike the competitors, Uber didn’t focus on a multi-point service in Bangladesh. Uber Eats, a food delivery substitute of Uber even recently closed its operation in Bangladesh. What Uber focuses on is on perfecting the game it is already playing and created a strategy based on the offered service.
If you open the Uber app, you will find 7 different ride-sharing options at your disposal. This outnumbers the other competitors who offered 2 or 3 options at best. The strategy of Uber here is to offer something for everyone at every level of convenience. Whether it’s the moto service or the Uber Hire, the company is aiming to make ride-sharing an integral as well as personalized part of its users.
Recently Uber has also included auto-rickshaw in its service arsenal. Though they have been test driving the auto-rickshaw in Chittagong since 2019, it’s the first time people of Dhaka will be able to experience auto-rickshaw service through Uber.

Way Forward
The move to include auto-rickshaw by Uber is a clear indication of mobility aggression by the company. As the company adds more and more transportation options to its service, customers will inadvertently incline towards Uber putting its competitors in a precarious position. And if basic economics has taught us anything, in a highly competitive market, the customer is always better off.
Currently, Obhai is the only competitor to provide auto-rickshaw service. The move by Uber will force the likes of Pathao and Shohoz to reconsider their business approach, all the while enabling Uber to take advantage of their already well-established mobility ecosystem.
We already talked about other niche-based services. The likes of Jatri which is working with the public bus transportation and shuttle, a convenient and safe group transportation system initially developed for women are now looking to broaden their horizon as well.
So is Uber doing things right? For the time being, yes. Their move to include auto rickshaws will definitely give them an upper hand against the prominent competitors and gather considerable market share. The strategy of Uber to become the Amazon of transportation may well become true given how their strategies resonate with their customers.
