Actor Sohel Chowdhury murder: Aziz Mohammad Bhai among 3 gets life imprisonment
A Dhaka tribunal on Thursday (May 09, 2024) sentenced three people to life imprisonment in a case filed over killing famous Bangladeshi film actor of the ‘90s Sohel Chowdhury.
Those sentenced to life imprisonment are: businessman Aziz Mohammad Bhai, Afakul Islam alias Bunty Islam, owner of Trumps Club, and Adnan Siddique.
Judge of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-2 Arunav Chakroborty handed down the judgment. All the convicts are on the run.

The court also acquitted six others as allegations brought against them could not be proved.
On December 19, 1998, actor Sohel was shot dead by some terrorists in front of Trumps Club in Abedin Tower at city’s Banani Road-17.
A murder case was filed in this regard at Gulshan police station by Sohels’ brother Towhidul Islam Chowdhury.
On July 30,1999, Abul Kashem Bepari, Additional police Commissioner of Detective Police, submitted a charge sheet against nine people in this case.
On October 30, 2001, Dhaka’s third additional metropolitan session judge court framed charges against the nine accused.

After two years of framing charges the case was transferred to Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-2.
The trial in the case remained suspended for 20 years as the High Court stayed the trial proceeding following a petition filed by one of the accused in 2003 .

3 get life imprisonment in Barishal for killing girl after rape
A Barishal court sentenced three people to life imprisonment for killing a nine-year-old girl after rape in 2016.
The convicts are—Based Khan, 48, son of Abdul Aziz and Shahrier Shakil Khan, 27, son of Matier Rahman of Uttar Sagardi in Barishal city while another was an adolescent.
Based was tried in absentia.
Barishal Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Md Yarab Hossain handed down the punishment.
The court also fined them Tk 50,000 each, in default, to suffer six months more in rigorous imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, Tonny, daughter of Tulu Palwan of Nobogram area in the city had gone out to call her father at Zia Road upon the request of her mother Sumi Akter and went missing on September 18, 2016.
Later, she was found dead at a waterbody adjacent to their house on the following day.
Madrasa teacher sentenced to life imprisonment for raping student in Chapainawabganj
Tulu Palwan filed a case in this connection and police detained Shakil and the adolescent boy for interrogation. They also gave confessional statements admitting their guilt before the court.
Police submitted chargesheet against the trio on June 22, 2017.

One gets jail unto death, another life term jail for killing minor boy in city
A Dhaka court on Sunday sentenced a man to imprisonment unto death and another one to life imprisonment for killing a seven-year-old boy in Kadamtoli of Shyampur upazila in the capital.
The convict who was got jail unto death was Md Hanif while the lifer was Zahid Hossain.
Judge of Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-4, Mohammad Morshed Alam pronounced the judgement in absence of the convicts.

The court also fined Hanif Tk 50,000, in default, to suffer six months more rigorous imprisonment while fined Zahid Tk 5,000, in default, to suffer five months more in jail.
The court also issued arrest warrants against them.
According to the prosecution, the convicts took Abdullah, 7, son of Golam Mostafa of Kadamtoli area, to a fallow land near Ujala Match factory on September 21, 2016 and killed him with a stone.
Mostafa, father of Abdullah, filed a case with Kadamtoli Police Station.
Police on January 17, 2018, submitted chargesheet against the convicts.

Bagerhat: 2 get life in prison for fourth-grader murder
A Bagerhat court on Thursday sentenced two men to life imprisonment for the 2019 murder of a four-grader.
Senior Judge Md Rabiul Islam of Bagerhat District and Sessions Judge Court gave the order in the presence of the convicts.
The lifers are Kawsar Sheikh, 53, and Imdadul Shikder, 23, from Kartik Dia village of Sadar upazila.
The court cleared another accused Abul Kalam Azad, son of lifer Kawsar, from charges during the hearing.

According to the case complaint, on August 23, 2019, Kalyan Paul, son of trader Kamal Paul from Kartik Dia, was playing near his house when the accused lured him away from home and killed him by slitting his throat with a sharp weapon. They later dumped the boy's body in a ditch.
On August 25, the accused asked for Tk30,000 from Kalyan's family saying they know the whereabouts of the schoolboy. On the same day, police recovered Kalyan's body from the ditch with the help of the locals and Kalyan's father filed a case against unnamed people with the police.
On April 26, 2021, the Police Bureau of Investigation submitted a charge sheet to the court against three people, including Kawsar and Imdadul.
Kalyan's father Kamal said he did not get justice and will appeal to the superior court.

3 JMB men get life imprisonment in arms case in Lalmonirhat
A Lalmonirhat tribunal on Monday sentenced three members of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to life imprisonment and another one to 14 years imprisonment in an arms case.
Lalmonirhat Special Tribunal Judge Mizanur Rahman handed down the punishment.
The lifers are identified as Shafiqul Islam, son of Nazrul islam, Apel Misti, son of Lutfur Rahman and Mokhlesur Rahman, son of Hafizur Rahman of Kaliganj upazila.

The man who got 14 years in jail is identified as Tafizul Islam, son of Mojibur Rahman of Patgram upazila.
According to the prosecution, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-13 arrested four JMB men while they were holding a clandestine meeting on August 2, 2018.
The elite force also seized arms and bullets from their possession.

Couple gets life imprisonment for killing young girl in Narayanganj
A Narayanganj court on Tuesday sentenced a couple to life imprisonment in a case filed for killing a young girl in 2013 - although both of them were tried in absentia.
Narayanganj Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Nazmul Haque Shyamol handed down the sentence.

Swapan Gazi, 36, son of Abdul Majid alias Mannan and his wife Ankhi Akter, 30, of Fatullah area in Narayanganj district were also fined them Tk 50,000 each - in default, to suffer three month more in rigorous imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, Marjina Akter, 16 used to live with the couple at theit rented house in Fatullah.
On November 10, 2013, Swapan strangulated Marjina to death after failing to rape her. Ankhi helped Swapan in the crime.

Police recovered the body and arrested two other young girls from the house.
During interrogation, police came to know that the couple used to traffic the girls for sex.
Russel, the owner of the house filed a case with Fatullah Police Station. Police submitted chargesheet against them later.

5 get life term for murder in Faridpur
A court in Faridpur on Monday sentenced five people to life imprisonment for killing a man in Alfadanga upazila in 2012.
The lifers are Nur Islam, Md Monir Sheikh, Iktar Molla, Enayet Amin of Faridpur, and Miraj Hossain, of Gopalganj district. All of them except Nur Islam were tried in absentia.
Faridpur additional district and sessions judge-1 (Special Tribunal) Ashok Kumar Dutta delivered the judgment.

The court also fined the convicts Tk 20,000 each.
According to the case, Shahidul Islam, who used to drive motorcycle on rent, was found dead in Konagram in the upazila on July 28 in 2012.
Later, a murder case was filed at Alfadanga police station.

3 get life imprisonment for ‘gang rape’ of 2 girls in city
A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced three people to life imprisonment for raping two teenage girls in the capital’s Kadamtali area two years ago.
Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal -3 Judge AM Zulfikar Hayat pronounced the judgment.
The lifers are Sohel Bepari, 38, Rana Bepari, 32, and Akter Ali, 38.
The court also filed them Tk 1 lakh each and they have to serve six months more jail in case of failure to pay the fine.
The court acquitted another accused as charges brought against him could not be proved.
According to case statement, the victims and accused were tenants of the same building at Kadamtali area.

On February 8, 2020, the accused forcefully entered the victims’ flat around 10 pm and raped them.
Later the two victims filed a case at Kadamtali police station. Police submitted a chargesheet in the case against four accused.
On September 15, 2021, the court began official trial in the case by framing charges against the accused.

4 get life imprisonment for murder in Chattogram
A Chattogram court on Monday sentenced four people to life imprisonment for killing an expatriate in 1999.
Chattogram Additional District and Session Judge Court-3 Judge Ferdous Wahid handed down the punishment.
The convicts are—Md Nur Islam, his son Osman goni, Sarwar Kamal and Abbas Uddin. The court also fined them Tk 20,000 in default to suffer two years more in rigorous imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, Nurul Kabir, an expatriate of Adhunagar Rustompara in Lohagara upazila, took his nephew Islam, son of Nur Islam to abroad.
After returning to the country, Nurul demanded Tk 1.70 lakh from his brother Nur for taking his son abroad by expending money. The two brothers had been at loggerheads over the issue.
On December 6, 1999, Nur along with his sons swooped on the house of Nurul and hit him with a sharp weapon. Later he succumbed to his injuries at Chattogram Medical College and Hospital.

Khaleda Yeasmin, wife of Nurul, filed a case with Chattogram Judicial Court.
On December 21, police submitted chargesheet against six people.
After examining records and witnesses, the court handed down the punishment and acquitted two others as allegations brought against them could not be proved.

3 to die, four get life imprisonment for murder in Dinajpur
A Dinajpur court on Monday sentenced three persons to death and four others to life imprisonment for killing a 24-year-old grocery shop owner in 2009.
The condemned convicts are—Rezaul Karim Babu, Sharifur Islam and Atoar Rahman.
The lifers are—Golam Rabbani, Ekramul, Shahed Ali and Jahangir Alam.

Dinajpur Additional District and Session Judge Mehedi Hasan Mandal handed down the punishment in presence of all the convicts.
According to the prosecution, the convicts killed Humayun Kabir, son of Shahidul Islam of Phulbari upazila on August 20, 2009 over land dispute.
On August 21, 2009, Humayun;s family lodged a complaint with Phulbari Police.
