Papia, her husband get 27 yrs jail in arms case
A Dhaka court here on Monday sentenced expelled Jubo Mohila League leader Shamima Nur Papia and her husband Mofizur Rahman Sumon to 27 years imprisonment each to in an arms case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Kayesh handed down the verdict when police produced them before a crowded courtroom in the afternoon.
On September 27, the court fixed today for delivering verdict in the case.
Investigation officer Arifuzzaman, sub-inspector of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), submitted charge sheet in the case on June 29. Charges were framed on August 23.
Twelve people were named as witnesses in the case.

Those behind Papia's misdeeds to face action: Asaduzzaman
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Friday said those behind Shamima Nur Papia, expelled general secretary of Jubo Mohila League’s Narsingdi unit, will be brought to book.
“An investigation is underway against those committed crimes together with Papia. Those found to be involved will be brought under the law. No-one will be spared during the tenure of the present government,” he said.
While addressing a function marking the inauguration of a building of Darul Ulum Mabia Islamia Madrasa at Gerua Bazar in Ashulia, the minister also said the drive against corruption and casino will continue.
Talking about the bail of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, he said it is the jurisdiction of court. “The judiciary is fully independent... the government doesn’t interfere in it,” he said.
Asaduzzaman said the court took the decision about Khaleda’s bail as per law after considering all the aspects.
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Papia, 28, her husband Mofizur Rahman alias Sumon Chowdhury alias Moti Sumon, 38, and their two associates – Sabbir Khandaker, 29, and Sheikh Tayiba, 22 – from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on February 22 while they were trying to flee the country.
The following day, the elite force raided the two city houses of Papia and her rented presidential suite at a five-star hotel, and seized Tk 58.41 lakh in cash, seven passports, around Tk 2.12 lakh in cash and huge fake currencies.
