Gold smuggling case: 3 get life terms in Ctg court
A Chattogram court on Sunday sentenced three people to life in prison for bringing 120 gold bars into Bangladesh in June 2015.
The lifers are Zakir Uddin Munna, Md Zaheer and Md Faruk.
Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Begum Jebunnesa handed down the judgment in presence of one of the convicts on Sunday afternoon, Metropolitan Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Md Fakhruddin Chowdhury, said.
The court also fined them Tk 50,000 each, in default, to suffer three months more rigorous imprisonment.

On June 23, 2015, police arrested the three with 120 gold bars kept inside the oil tank of a private car in Bayazid Bostami police station area of the city.
Later, a case was filed at Bayazid Bostami police station.
Police submitted the charge sheet to the court on November 13, 2015.
On April 18, 2016, the court framed charges against the accused and passed an order to begin the trial.

Tk 73000 cr being laundered through gold smuggling annually: BAJUS
Bangladesh Jewellers’ Association (BAJUS) on Saturday said that around Tk73000 crore is laundered from Bangladesh every year through gold smuggling.
They have sought the government’s tough action and cooperation of intelligence agencies and law enforcers to stop gold smuggling through Bangladesh.
BAJUS leaders said this at a press conference held at the association’s office in Bashundhara city complex in the capital on Saturday.
Enmaul Haque Khan, Chairman of BAJUS standing committee on Ant-Smuggling and Legal Enforcement, gave the speech at the press conference.
Among others, Vice-chairman Bidhan Malakar, members Ikbal Uddin, Swapon Chandra Karmakar, Bikash Ghosh, Babul Rahman, were present at the function.

They claimed that Bangladesh is used as a transit of gold smuggling to neighboring countries by influential syndicates which should be stopped .
Gold worth around Tk200 crore is smuggled daily on average through Bangladesh airways, roads, and waterways, they said.
The jewellers’ association leaders said that they have prepared the report on gold smuggling and money laundering based on law enforcers’ information and newspaper reports regarding gold smuggling.
Replying to a query, BAJUS leaders said 15000 to 20000 bhoris of gold are being imported in Bangladesh through baggage of travellers which is legal.

Passenger from Saudi Arabia caught with over 2kg gold
Preventive team of Dhaka Customs House (DCH) detained a passenger from Saudi Arabia and seized gold weighing around 2.02 kg from Hazrat Shah Jalal International Airport on Saturday (May 08, 2021) noon.
The passenger was identified as Bahar Miah, hailing from Khagrachhari District.
Sources at the airport said based on secret information, officials of Customs preventive team took position at different strategic points of the airport.

The Customs officials increased their surveillance when a flight of Saudia Airlines landed at the airport from Saudi Arabia at around 12:50 p.m.
When Bahar was about to leave through the Green Channel of the airport, the Customs officials challenged him, said Deputy Commissioner (custumes preventive team ) of the DCH Sadek Hossain.
During primary interrogation Bahar denied carrying any gold consignment with his position. But presence of gold was detected through scanning his luggage, he said.

Later gold bars of around 2.02 kg was found from inside a pressure cooker and charger light. The gold was hidden in a unique way inside the pressure cooker and charger light so that nobody can detect it, he added.
Present market value of the gold recovered is around Taka 1.30 crore.
A case was filed with airport police station in this connection and the passenger was handed over to the police station.

Man held with Tk. 1.8 crore worth gold
Preventive team of Dhaka Custom House on Saturday (May 01, 2021) arrested a man with 2.6 Kg gold at Dhaka Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
On the basis of a secret tip off, the gold was seized from Joynal Abedin, a passenger of Flight No. SV 3580 from Saudi Arabia at 01:25 pm.
According to the passport, Joynal Abedin is from Noakhali district.

When asked he denied about the gold while crossing green channel.
Later while scanning the luggage, a total 2.8 kg gold was found hidden inside charger light, toys and flask, confirmed Dhaka Customs House Deputy Commissioner (Preventive).
Scan of the luggage with the passenger turned up about 2,600 kg of gold inside a charger light peas, toys and flax, according to the Deputy Commissioner (Preventive), Dhaka Customs House.

Estimated market value of the seized gold is Tk 1.8 crore.
The passenger has been handed over to the Airport Police Station and a criminal case has been filed.
The seized gold will be dealt with under the Customs Act, said the Deputy Commissioner.

3 cases filed against ‘Golden Monir’
Three cases were filed against ‘Golden Monir’ in connection with the recovery of foreign currencies, firearms and liquor from his Badda residence on Saturday.
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) filed the cases — one under Special Powers Act, Arms Act and Narcotics Control Act -- at Badda Police Station on Sunday, said Pervez Islam, officer-in-charge of Badda Police Station.
Earlier in the day, Rab handed over Golden Monir, who was arrested from his Badda residence on Saturday, to Badda police.
He will be produced before the court today with remand prayer, said the OC.
On Saturday, Rab arrested Monir, locally known as ‘Golden Monir’, along with firearms, drugs and huge foreign currencies from his residence in the capital’s Badda area.
