Workplace accidents: 1034 workers died in 2022
A total of 1034 workers died in workplace accidents while 1,037 others were injured across Bangladesh in 2022, a new report said on Monday.
The report by the Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS), however, said that the incidents of casualties decreased by 2 percent last year compared with 2021.
It said a total of 135 workers died due to ‘repression” at work, and 155 others were injured.
There were 196 incidents of workers’ unrest, and of them 115 were in the apparel sector, the report said.

The BILS has prepared the survey report based on reports published in different newspapers in 2022.
According to the report, 499 casualties or 48 percent of the deaths, happened in the transport sector, which is the highest in a single-sector count.
Worker dies in gas cylinder explosion at BSRM plant in Mirsarai
A 32-old-worker died in a gas cylinder explosion at rod manufacturing organization BSRM in Mirsarai upazila of the district on Tuesday.
The deceased—Sokel Ahmed, was son of Suruj Miah of Ishwarganj upazila of Mymensingh.
Co-workers said the blast happened suddenly in the afternoon when they were working at scrap yard of the BSRM in Sonaphara area under Jorajganj police station of the upazila, leaving him critically injured.

At first he was rushed to Mirsarai Upazila Health Complex and from where he was shifted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) with life-threatening injuries.
Sokel succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at the CMCH, they said.
Jahed Hossain, officer-in-charge of Jorajganj police station, said they would hand over the body to the family upon completion of legal procedures.
Delwar Hossain Mollah, manager (admin) Of Mirsarai unit of the BSRM, said Sokel was not their employee but he was assigned by contactor firm ‘Hajera Enterprise’.
Compensation will be given to the victim’s family after discussing with the contactor firm, he added.
Worker dies falling off under-construction building in capital
A 20-year-old construction worker died after falling off an under-construction building in Shantibagh area of the capital on Sunday morning.
The deceased was identified as Md Khalid Hasan of Rangpur district.
Khalid accidentally slipped and fell from the rooftop of the 11 storied building around 11am, said his co-worker Zahidul Islam.

Later, he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared him dead on arrival, said Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH Police Outpost.
The body has been kept at the hospital morgue, he added.
Worker dies in N’ganj gas cylinder blast
A worker died and two others sustained burn injuries as a gas cylinder exploded at a dockyard in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Nuruzzaman, a resident of Dohar of Dhaka and the injured were Shahidul and Yunus Mia.
The gas cylinder exploded at Shanghai-8 ship at King Fisher Dockyard in Darikandi area around 10 am, leaving three workers of a ship severely injured, said Rupganj Police Station Sub-Assistant Inspector Shahidul Islam Khan.

The injured were rushed to US Bangla Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared Nuruzzaman dead, he added.
The body has been sent to Sadar General Hospital morgue.

Worker dies after being crushed by agriroller in Faridpur jute mill
A 25-year-old youth died after being crushed between two rollers of a softening and cleaning machine at a jute mill in Shibrampur upazila of Faridpur on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Raju Sheikh, of the upazila. He was a worker at RM Jute Mill.
Raju accidently crushed between two rollers of a machine used for jute while working at the mill around 9am, said Md Abdul Jalil, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali police station.

Later, the fire service men recovered the body from the machine, said Faridpur Fire Service Senior Station Manager Subhash Baroi.
Legal steps will be taken after an investigation, said the OC.
Worker killed in Chuadanga boiler blast
A 22-year-old worker was killed in a boiler explosion at a rice mill at Piaratala in Jibonnagar upazila of Chuadanga district on Sunday, said police.
The deceased was identified as Foysal Hossain, son of Kamal Hossain of the area.

The explosion occurred around 11:45 am when Foysal was working in the mill, leaving him dead on the spot, said Abdul Khalek, officer-in-charge of Jibonnagar Police Station.
Worker killed in Kurigram road accident
A worker died after a paddy-laden truck he was traveling in flipped over and trampled him on Chandipur Bridge in Nageshwari upazila of Kurigram in the small hours of Friday.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Gafur, 50, a resident of Daknirpat village under the upazila.
Amzad Hossain, an eyewitness, said the accident occurred when the driver of the truck coming from Nageshwari lost control of the vehicle on Kurigram-Nageshwari road around 12.30am.

After two hours of frantic efforts, the worker who lay trapped under the overturned truck was pulled out alive and rushed to Kurigram General Hospital. He, however, succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.
"A probe is on," Nageshwari police station duty officer Selim Mia told UNB.

Falling crane kills BRT project worker in Gazipur
A construction worker of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project died after a crane fell on him in Gazipur’s Chandna Chourasta area on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway on Friday afternoon.
The identity of the worker couldn’t be known yet.
Some others were injured in the accident.

Mohsin Reza, a Supplier of Rafiq Enterprize, said that the crane fell off a trailer truck, causing the death of the construction worker.
“The deceased’s body has been sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy,” said Maleq Khasru Khan, an Officer In-charge of Gazipur Metropolitan Police’s (GMP) Bason police station.
Worker killed, 2 hurt in Ctg shipyard
A 45-year-old worker was killed and two others were injured after being hit by large aluminum tank at a ship breaking yard in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Sadekur Rahman Bulbul, hailing from Naogaon district.

The accident occurred around 1pm at Sagarika Ship Breaking Yard near Shitalpur Chowdhury Ghat coast when Sadekur and two other workers were hit by an aluminum tank (big drum) of an old ship, said Suman Banik, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sitakunda police station.
Later, the injured were rushed to nearby BSB Hospital where doctors declared Sadekur dead, he added.
