Met office warns of cyclonic storm as Bay depression intensifies
As the depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a low-pressure system with the potential to develop into a cyclonic storm, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued warning signal No. 1 for four coastal regions.
The low-pressure system is currently positioned approximately 700 kilometres south-southwest of Cox's Bazar seaport, according to satellite images.
Low over Bay may intensify into cyclone: BMD
As of 6 a.m. on Tuesday, it was located 785 kilometres south-southwest of Chattogram seaport, 700 kilometres south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar seaport, 820 kilometres south-southeast of Mongla seaport, and 760 kilometres south-southeast of Payra seaport.
It is moving west-northwest and is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm.
Within 44 kilometres of the centre of the low-pressure system, the maximum sustained wind speed is 40 kilometres per hour, with gusts reaching up to 50 kilometres per hour.
The sea near the centre of the low-pressure system is reported to be rough.
The Met Office has advised Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla, and Payra seaports to hoist distant cautionary signal No. 1.

All fishing boats and trawlers operating in the North Bay of Bengal and deep-sea areas have been instructed to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice. They should be prepared to seek shelter at short notice if necessary.

Cyclone Yaas: Maritime ports in Bangladesh asked to hoist signal No 2
The maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra were advised to hoist distant warning signal No 2 on Monday instead of cautionary No 1 as the depression over the Southeast Bay and adjoining Andaman Sea intensified into cyclonic storm ‘Yaas’.
The depression over East-Central Bay and adjoining area moved north-westwards and intensified into a cyclonic storm ‘Yaas’ over the same area.
In a special weather bulletin, the Met Office said at 6 am today, it was about 775 kms south-southwest of Chattogram port, 605 km south-southwest of Cox's Bazar port, 650 km south of Mongla port and 605 km south of Payra port.

It is likely to intensify further and move in a north-northwesterly direction.
The maximum sustained wind speed within 54 kms of the deep depression centre is about 62 KPH rising to 88 KPH in gusts or squalls, the bulletin said.
The sea will remain very rough near the depression centre.
All the fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution. They were also advised not to venture into the deep sea.

Maritime ports asked to hoist signal No 1
The maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted distant cautionary signal No 1 as a depression over East-Central Bay and adjoining area moved slightly Westwards over the same area.
