Members of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) arrested a man along with six gold bars and ornaments, weighing around one kg, from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka earlier today. The arrestee was identified as Oli Ahad, 46, son of Bazlu Mia of Ashuganj in Brahmanbaria district. Based on a tip-off, a team of APBn conducted a drive at the airport area and arrested Ahad around 1:10 am, said Additional SP of Airport Armed Police (AAP) Mohammad Ziaul Haque. Members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered eight gold bars worth Tk 75 lakh from the border area in Benapole early Saturday. Lieutenant Colonel Moahmmad Tanvir Rahman, commandant of the BGB-21 Khulna battalion, said tipped-off they conducted a drive along the Patukhali border with India around 1am. Sensing presence of the BGB members, the smugglers fled the scene abandoning a bag wrapped with a black cloth in Sajaler Morr area, he said. Eight gold bars weighing around 938 grams were found inside the bag. BGB has so far recovered 66 kilograms of gold in 23 drives in last 13 months and arrested 23 people in these connections.
Police on Monday detained two smugglers and seized 62 gold bars, weighing 7.025 kg from them along Sharsha border in Jashore district. The detainees are Nayem Hossain, 40, and Azharul Islam, 35 - both residents of Sharsha upazila. Acting on a tip-off, a team of police conducted a drive along the bordering area and detained them this evening while they were trying to smuggle the gold to India, said Additional SP of Navaron Circle Police, Jewel Imran. The market value of the recovered gold is estimated to be around Tk 5.33 crore, the officer said. More will be disclosed in the press conference tomorrow said ASP, adding that the case against the accused gold smugglers is under process.
A Bangladeshi national was detained with a gold bar weighing 1.16 kg at Sylhet's Osmani International Airport on Thursday morning, Customs officials said. The detainee has been identified as Mainul Islam Shakil, a resident of Jaintapur upazila of Sylhet. Customs officials on Thursday detained man along with 10 gold bars at Chattogram Shah Amanat International Airport. The detainee was Sazzad Hossain, a passenger of BG-4136 flight that landed at the airport from Jeddah. The bars were hidden wrapped in scotch tape in lithium battery carbon inside a toy car, he said. Legal action will be taken against the detainee, he said. A passenger was detained by Customs officials at Dhaka international airport in the early hours of Friday for allegedly attempting to smuggle in two gold bars of 1.6kg, worth Tk1.06 crore. The detainee has been identified as Jashim Mia, a resident of Narsingdi district. Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Dhaka Customs House intercepted Jashim at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport upon his arrival from Jeddah around 2.45am on Friday. "The two gold bars weighing about 1.6kg were recovered from a flower pot that he was carrying," Deputy Commissioner of the Dhaka Customs House (preventive team) Mohammad Abdus Sadek said. The gold bars worth Tk1.06 crore have been seized and submitted to the national reserve, while the passenger was handed over to the police.
