6 killed, 20 injured in India road crash
Six people have been killed and 20 others injured in a head-on collision between a tractor-trolley and a speeding truck in the western Indian state of Rajasthan, police said on Saturday.
The accident occurred in the Sumirpor area of Pali district, nearly 300 kms from state capital Jaipur late on Friday night.
"The tractor-trolley was carrying pilgrims from Jaisalmer district when the speeding truck coming from the opposite direction crashed into the vehicle at high speed," a police officer told the local media.
While six of the pilgrims died on the spot in the impact of the collision, those injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital. "The condition of some of the injured is said to be serious," the officer said.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office tweeted to express his grief over the tragedy.
"The accident in Pali, Rajasthan is saddening. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. I pray for a speedy recovery of those injured," Modi said.

"A probe has been ordered into the accident," the police officer said.

5 tourists killed in India road crash
At least five people were killed and two others injured when their SUV crashed into a speeding dumper on a busy expressway near the national capital on Thursday.
Police said the accident occurred on the Yamuna Expressway in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh's Greater Noida city bordering Delhi when the victims, all tourists from western India, were returning from Agra, where they had gone to visit the Taj Mahal.

"They were on the way from Agra towards Noida (sister city of Greater Noida) when their SUV hit the dumper truck from the rear side near Jewar toll plaza," a spokesperson for Noida Police told the local media.
While five of the occupants died on the spot, the injured have been hospitalised. "The condition of one of them is critical," a police officer said.
UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took to Twitter to expresse grief over the loss of the lives in the accident. "Praying for peace to departed souls," he said.
A probe has been ordered into the accident, the police spokesperson said, adding that the truck was seized.

9 Hindu devotees die in India road crash
As many as nine Hindu devotees returning home on a three-wheeler after performing a religious ritual died after a speeding truck crashed into their vehicle in the Indian state of Assam, bordering Bangladesh, Thursday.
The accident occurred on national highway number 8 in the Baithakhal area of Assam's Karimganj district.
Police said that the truck was travelling at a high speed and its driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to the accident. "Nine of the 10 Hindu devotees on the auto died in the impact of the crash," a police official said.

Assam's chief minister Himanta Biswa Sharma took to social media to offer his condolences to the bereaved families.
"I deeply mourn the tragic deaths of nine persons in an accident at Baitakhal, Patharkhandi...," he tweeted. "Assam police are trying to trace the driver of the truck who fled the scene..."
The police officer also said that "efforts are on to nab the truck driver in the hit-and-run case". "Our teams are scanning the footage of CCTV cameras in the area," he added.

17 killed in India road crash
At least 17 people have been killed and more than five others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a three-wheeler in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Wednesday.
The accident occurred in Kanpur district on Tuesday night when the passenger bus was heading towards the national capital from Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh.
"There was a collision between two vehicles, after which the bus overturned. While 17 people were killed on the spot, the five injured have been admitted to a local hospital," Inspector General of Kanpur Police Mohit Agarwal told the local media.
The victims were occupants of both the vehicles, police said.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased. He has also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of those killed in the accident.

"Prime Minister @narendramodi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to a tragic accident in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Rs. 50,000 would be provided to those injured," the Prime Minister's Office tweeted.
A probe has been ordered into the accident, Agarwal said.

13 die in India road crash
A group of 12 women returning home from work in an auto-rickshaw and its driver were killed when the overloaded three-wheeler collided head-on with a passenger bus in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh Tuesday, police said.
The accident occurred in Madhya Pradesh's princely city of Gwalior, some 400 kms from state capital Bhopal, this morning.

"The bus was travelling at high speed and its driver failed to spot the auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction, leading to the fatal crash," Gwalior police chief Amit Sanghi told the media.
While eight of the 12 women -- all temporary cooks at a local government health centre -- and the auto-rickshaw driver died on the spot, four succumbed to their injuries on the way to a nearby hospital, the police chief said.
"Fortunately, passengers travelling in the bus, which was headed to Morena district from Gwalior, escaped unhurt," he added.

Indian President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan have all expressed grief at the loss of lives. Modi has also announced compensation for the families of the victims.
"PM @narendramodi has approved an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each from Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to the unfortunate accident in Gwalior, MP," the Prime Minister's Office tweeted later in the day.
In his condolence message, President Kovind said, "The news of the death of the passengers, mostly women, in the road accident in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, has deeply saddened me. My heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones."
A case has been registered against the bus driver for rash and negligent driving. "He fled from the spot. Efforts are on to nab him," the police chief said.
