CU suspends classes, exams due to torrential rainfall till Aug 10
The Chattogram University (CU) authority on Monday announced to suspend classes and examinations of all faculty from Tuesday till August 10 (Thursday) due to the torrential rainfall triggered by the depression in the Bay of Bengal.
The CU authorities took the decision on Monday, said a press release, signed by KM Nur Ahmed, acting registrar of the university.

However, the offices will remain open during this period.
According to the press release, it is said that the normal life of people and communication inside the university have been hampering badly due to the torrential rainfall for the last several days.
After considering the overall situation, the authorities concerned of Chattogram University have decided to suspend all classes and examinations for three days.

3 injured in clash between two BCL factions at CU
At least three students were injured in a clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s (BCL) Chittagong University (CU) unit on Friday evening.
Eye-witnesses told UNB that supporters of the ‘Bijoy’group were divided into two factions and clashed with each other, leaving three students injured and vandalising eight rooms of Suhrawardy Hall.
Members of both the groups were seen with local weapons in their hall premises.
Acting Proctor of Chittagong University (CU) Dr. Shahidul Islam said that police went immediately after hearing the news. Police brought the situation under control.
None of the leaders could be reached despite repeated attempts.

20 hurt in clash between two BCL factions while paying homage at CU
A clash broke out in Chittagong University in the first hour of 21st February between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League over paying tributes at Shaheed Minar.
The clash erupted at around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, which left 20 activists injured, said the leaders of the two groups.
According to campus sources, these two groups- ‘brothers’ and ‘Moku’- are sub-factions of BCL’s CU unit’s Bijoy group.
While the leaders and activists of ‘brothers’ group were on their way to the university’s central Shaheed Minar the activists of ‘Moku’ group tried to bar them from going there, triggering the violence.
One of the injured was transferred to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital.
Delwar, an officer at CU Medical Centre, said a total of 20 people received treatment.
Delwar Hossain, a leader of a faction of Bijoy group said, “They had taken over our rooms. When we tried to talk about it, the situation turned violent.”
“They were trying to evict some of our activists from Alaol Hall for several days now and started chasing us today when we were going to the hall,” Hossain said.
Several leaders and activists from the ‘brothers’ group claimed they were attacked while carrying wreaths to the Shaheed Minar.
Although the groups were engaged in the clash for nearly two hours no one from the university administration was reportedly present there.
Dr. Shahidul Islam, acting Proctor of the university, said proctorial body and police went there and controlled the situation upon receiving information.
“We will look into the matter seriously if there’s a written complaint,” he said.

Chattogram University fine arts students asked to leave campus due to 'renovation work'
The fine arts department students of Chattogram University were asked to leave their hall and the campus by 10pm Thursday due to "renovation work" on the campus, the authorities said.
The decision was taken at the 542nd syndicate meeting this evening, Chattogram University Proctor Rabiul Hasan Bhuiyan said.
"After the urgent meeting, the students were asked to leave the campus and vacate the Shilpi Rashid Chowdhury dormitory by 10pm. All in-person classes and exams will be suspended in the fine arts institute for the next month to carry out some renovation work," he added.
On Wednesday night, the proctorial team and police conducted a raid on the campus. They searched every room of the institution's Shilpi Rashid Chowdhury dormitory and the teachers' club.
On November 2 last year, the students staged a sit-in programme and started boycotting classes for an indefinite period to press home their 22-point demand, including renovation of dormitories and the library, and relocation of the campus to Hathazari main campus.
On November 16, the students staged a demonstration, locking the main gate of the institute and boycotting classes and exams, as their demands were not met.
The students returned to classes on January 23 on some conditions. However, they resumed their protest Tuesday as their "demands were not met."

CU JCD committee annulled six years after formation
The central body of BNP’s student wing Jatiyatabadi Chattra Dal (JCD) has annulled its Chittagong University unit - around six years after its formation.
A press release signed by the central committee’s office secretary Md Jahangir Alam said this on Friday.
“The date expired committee of the Chittagong University JCD unit was annulled to form a new committee as per the decision of the central committee,” the release said adding that central President and General Secretary Kazi Rawnakul Islam Sarbon and Saif Mahmud Jewel respectively approved the decision.
Necessary measures will be taken to reform the grainsizing committee, it read.

A 69-member committee with Khorshed Alam and Shahidul Islam as president and general secretary of the CU unit was formed in October, 2016.
Later, a full-fledged committee comprising 243 members was also announced on May 18, 2018 but its activities on the campus were not seen remarkably.

22-point demand: CU fine arts students on indefinite class boycott
The fine arts students of Chattogram University (CU) Thursday started boycotting classes for an indefinite period to press home their 22-point demand, including renovation of dormitories and the library.
The other major demands are supply of pure drinking water, bus service for students; enough dining, canteen, and washroom facilities, supply of art materials, maintenance of hygiene, smooth power supplies in all classrooms, and internet connection.
More than 150 students of the Institute of Fine Arts staged a sit-in protest in front of the institute in the port city in the morning, declaring their demands.

Khandakar Masrul Al Fahim, a protesting student, said: "We have called for the boycott of classes as we found no solutions to our problems despite making repeated complaints."
Professor Pranab Mitra Chowdhury, director of the institute, said: "We already talked to the authority about the problems the students are facing and hope to find a solution soon."

German artist-couple make CU shuttle trains their canvas
Lush green paddy fields in a bucolic setting, the elusive Royal Bengal Tigers and the august Jatiya Sangsad -- all have found their place on the Chittagong University (CU) shuttle trains.
All thanks to a German artist-couple who have embarked on an ambitious project in making the CU shuttle trains a whole lot prettier to look. Some 14 trains are part of the CU shuttle service that began in 1980.
Head of Germany's RUSB art group, Lucas Gilinger, and his wife Livia Gilinger are the two who have actually taken up the initiative of beautifying the coaches, with permission from the Bangladesh Railways and the CU top brass.

They started their work on July 22 and will continue till July 27. A group of students as well as teachers of the university's Fine Arts department has also chipped in to beautify their beloved shuttle trains.

CU student assault: Police seek 7-day remand for arrestees
Police have sought a 7-day remand for five Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists who were arrested in the case filed over the sexual harassment of a female student at Chittagong University.The arrestees were identified as Mohammad Azim, 23, a second-year student of History department of CU, Nurul Absar alias Babu, 22, second year student of Anthropology department of CU, Nur Hossain alias Shaon, 22, a first year student of Hathazari Government College, and Masud Rana alias Masud, 22, and Saiful Islam a second year student of the same college.Police saught 7 days remand for questioning the five people arrested in the sexual harassment case, said Ruhul Amin Sabuj, officer-in-charge of Hathajari Model Police Station."We will interrogate them after receiving the court order", the OC added.On July 17, a female student was physically assaulted by five youths while she was going to the Botanical Garden from Pritilata Hall of the campus with her friend around 10pm.

Two of 5 assailants finally identified in CU incident
The local administration has identified two youths involved in a sexual assault on a female student at Chittagong University.
However, three others involved in the incident have not yet been identified, said Shahidul Islam, assistant proctor of the university.
He said that the university administration and the police are jointly investigating the matter.
He, however, said the names of those identified will not be disclosed at this moment for the sake of investigation.
The proctor said this while briefing journalists on the campus on Friday.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hathazari police station Ruhul Amin Sabuj said that investigation is going on in the case of sexual harassment of a CU student. The names of those culprits cannot be revealed because the matter is under investigation, he added.

Earlier on Sunday, a female student was physically assaulted by five youths while she was going to the Botanical Garden from Pritilata Hall of the campus with her friend around 10pm.

Meanwhile, hundreds of students staged a protest on the campus on Wednesday night, demanding justice for the female student who was allegedly harassed.

Assault on CU student: Some youths identified, claims VC
Chittagong University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Shireen Akhtar said the university administration has identified some youths involved with an assault on a female student, and efforts are on to identify the rest of the culprits.
She, however, said details about the matter will not be disclosed at this time because the attaack is under investigation.
The VC said this while briefing journalists on the campus on Thursday.
Shireen said, “We will disclose details about the matter on Sunday. The probe committee has already identified some culprits. None will be spared.”
Earlier on Sunday, a female student was physically assaulted by five youths while she was going to the Botanical Garden from Pritilata Hall of the campus with her friend around 10pm.
