Attack on Navy officer: arrest warrant issued for Irfan Selim
A Dhaka court has issued an arrest warrant for Irfan Selim, son of Dhaka-7 MP Haji Selim, in a case over the unprovoked attack on an off-duty Navy officer in 2021.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court Judge Muhammad Asaduzzaman Nur passed the order while rejecting an application for bail by the accused.
The court had earlier set Wednesday (Feb. 8) for hearings, but Ifran was absent from court on account of illness. A time petition was also placed for him, but the court rejected it.
Irfan's counsel, Sri Prannath, prayed for bringing forward the date of hearing due to his personal jobs.
Rejecting the time petition, the court issued the arrest warrant for Irfan and asked for the trial process to be formally initiated through the framing of charges against the five accused, including Irfan.
The court also set March 6 for recording testimonies of witnesses in the case.
The other four accused are his bodyguard Jahidul Mollah, driver Mizanur Rahman, Madina Group Protocol Officer AB Siddique Dipu and associate Kazi Ripon.
Of them, Jahidul has been in jail, Mizanur and Dipu are now out on bail, while Ripon is absconding.
A case was filed with Dhanmondi Police Station against Irfan Selim for assaulting a navy official, Lieutenant Wasif Ahmed Khan, more than two years back. October 26, 2020.
Lt Wasif filed the case against four named, including Irfan Selim, also councillor of ward-30 of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), and 2-3 unnamed persons he accused.
According to the case statement, a private car hit Lt Wasif's motorcycle near Labaid Hospital at Dhanmondi on October 25, 2020 when he along with his wife was returning to their Mohammadpur residence from Nilkhet area.
Members of Rapid action Battalion (Rab) detained Irfan Selim in this connection later.

Hearing on plea challenging stay on Irfan Selim’s bail on April 25
The Appellate Division of Supreme Court on Thursday fixed April 25 for hearing a petition filed by the state challenging bail of Irfan Selim that was granted by the High Court (HC) in a case over assaulting a Navy officer last year.
A virtual Appellate Division bench led by the Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain fixed the date. Advocate Abdul Baset Majumdar stood for Irfan, son of Awami League leader Haji Selim.
On March 18, the High Court granted him bail which was later stayed for four weeks by the chamber judge on March 28.

According to the case statement, a private car hit Bangladesh Navy’s Lieutenant Wasif Ahmed Khan’s motorcycle near Labaid Hospital at Dhanmondi on October 25, 2020 when he and his wife were returning to their Mohammadpur residence from Nilkhet.
Later, some people, including Irfan, came out of the car and physically assaulted Wasif and verbally abused his wife.
The Navy officer filed a case at Dhanmondi Police Station, naming four people including Irfan. The three other accused are AB Siddique Dipu, 45, Md Zahid, 35, and Md Mizanur Rahman, 30. All of them are behind bars now.

On October 26, 2020, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) detained Irfan from his father’s Devdas Lane residence in Old Dhaka. Two firearms, 38 walkie-talkies and liquor were seized from his house during the drive.
He was suspended from the post of councillor the next day. He has been facing four more cases.
He was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for keeping walkie-talkies illegally and another six months for possessing illegal liquor on October 26, 2020 by a mobile court led by Rab.

Hearing on Irfan Selim’s plea challenging stay on bail order on April 19
The Appellate Division on Thursday fixed April 19 for hearing a petition filed by Irfan Selim challenging stay on his bail order in a case filed over assaulting a Navy officer last year.
Chamber Judge Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order.

Navy officer assault case: SC stays HC bail to Irfan Selim
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Sunday stayed for four weeks the bail of Irfan Selim, son of Awami League leader Haji Selim, granted by the High Court in a case filed over assaulting a Navy officer in October last year.
Vacation chamber bench of the Appellate Division, Chamber judge Justice Obaidul Hassan stayed the bail after hearing a petition.
On March 18, the High Court granted bail to Irfan Selim in the case.
The HC bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim and Justice Md Badruzzaman granted the bail.
Advocate Syed Ahmed Raza stood for the petitioner while deputy attorney general Dr Mohammad Bashir Ullah represented the state.

On January 27, the High Court rejected the bail of Irfan Selim in the case.
The court also issued a rule asking why Irfan should not be granted bail. The state has been asked to respond to the rule within two weeks.
