Haji Salim shown arrested in attempted murder case
Haji Mohammad Salim, former lawmaker of Awami League (Dhaka-7) has been shown arrested in a case filed for attempting to kill a man during the July-August mass uprising.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza passed the order when Hasanur Rahman, sub-inspector of Chawkbazar Police Station and also the investigating officer of the case, produced him before the court with a prayer to show him arrested in the case.
The court also took the petition into cognisance and ordered sending him to jail, said Salim’s counsel Pran Nath.

According to the case statement, Fazlur Karim, 50, was injured in an attack in front of Dhaka Alia Madrasha on a procession on August 5.
Later, he was taken to a local hospital.
A case was filed against 104 people including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina on October 26.
Detectives from Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Haji Salim from Bangshal area of Dhaka on September 1.
He was put on five-day remand in the case the following day.

Haji Salim gets bail in corruption case
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today granted bail to Awami League lawmaker Haji Mohammad Salim in a corruption case.
A five-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, granted bail to Salim after hearing a leave-to-appeal petition filed by him.
Senior lawyer Syed Ahmed Raza appeared for the petitioner in court while Advocate M Khurshid Alam Khan appeared for ACC.

In 2007, ACC filed the case against Salim. On April 27, 2008, a Dhaka court jailed him for 13 years and fined him Tk 20 lakh. Salim moved the High Court against the verdict.
In 2011, the court overturned his sentence but ACC later appealed against the lower court verdict. Later, the Appellate Division asked the High Court to re-hear the petition.
On March 9 last year, the HC bench of Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice AKM Zahirul Huq upheld the lower court order, sentencing Salim to 10 years in jail after hearing a petition filed by ACC.

On February 10 this year, the HC released the full text of the verdict, asking Salim to surrender to a trial court concerned in 30 days. Salim surrendered before a Dhaka court on May 22. Later that day, a Dhaka court sent him to jail rejecting his bail petition.
With this bail order, there is no bar for Haji Salim to walk out of jail, said his lawyer Ahmed Raza.

Haji Salim's bail application rejected
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Monday rejected the bail petition of Awami League lawmaker Haji Salim in a graft case.
Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice M Enayetur Rahim refused to pass an order and fixed August 1 for hearing the petition in the full-bench of the Appellate division.
Advocate Syed Ahmed Raza stood for Salim.
On May 24, Salim moved the Supreme Court, seeking quashing of his 10-year prison sentence handed down by a lower court in the graft case.
Haji Salim's counsel Syed Ahmed Raza, submitted the plea to the Appellate Division of the apex court.
A bail petition was also submitted in the same case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), he said.
On May 22, Salim was sent to jail in this case by a Dhaka court following his surrender.
After spending a night in jail, he was admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on the following day.

Haji Salim, who was sentenced to 10 years in jail in the graft case, went to Bangkok for treatment on May 2 and returned home on May 5, sparking a huge controversy.
On February 10, the full text of the High Court’s order was published upholding his 10-year imprisonment.
The HC had earlier asked him to surrender before the trial court within 30 days of getting the order and also directed the trial court to cancel the bail order of the MP and issue an arrest warrant against him "if he does not surrender within the given time".
ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam said, “After this order, Haji Salim has lost the eligibility to remain an MP according to the Article 66 (2) of the Constitution.”

At the same time, the Dhaka-7 MP was acquitted of a three-year jail term in the same case filed by the ACC for concealing wealth information.
The High Court also reduced the fine imposed on Salim by half to Tk 10 lakh. He will have to spend one more year in jail if he fails to pay the fine.

Haji Salim: From jail to hospital
Awami League lawmaker Haji Mohammad Salim, serving a 10-year imprisonment for corruption, was admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on Monday, after a night in jail.
Subhash Kumar Ghosh, senior jail super of Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj, said Salim was taken to BSMMU around 9:45 am by an ambulance following a court order as he has been suffering from different diseases.
Earlier on Sunday, a Dhaka trial court sent Haji Salim to jail in a graft case rejecting his bail petition.
Judge of Special Court-7 Shahidul Islam passed the order when he surrendered before the court.

The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case against Haji Salim, an MP from Dhaka-7 constituency, and his wife Gulshan Ara in 2007 for allegedly amassing wealth beyond known sources of income and hiding information in the wealth statements.

SC upholds HC bail to Irfan Salim
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Sunday upheld the High Court order that granted bail to Irfan Selim in a case filed over assaulting a Navy officer last year.
A virtual bench led by the Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order after rejecting the petition filed by the state.
Advocate Abdul Baset Majumdar and Advocate Syed Ahmed Raza stood for Irfan while Additional Attorney General Sheikh Mohammad Morshed represented the state.
Advocate Syed Ahmed Raza, said “Five cases have been filed against Irfan in this connection. Of these, Irfan got acquitted from two cases in lower court while he secured bail in two other cases from the lower court and now the Appellate Division also upheld the High Court order in the last case.”
So that, there is no bar to release him, he added.
On April 22, the Appellate Division of Supreme Court fixed April 25 for hearing the petition filed by the state challenging bail of Irfan Selim in the Navy officer assault case.
On March 18, the High Court granted him bail which was later stayed for four weeks by the chamber judge on March 28.

On April 8, Irfan filed a petition challenging the stay order.
According to the case statement, a private car hit Bangladesh Navy’s Lieutenant Wasif Ahmed Khan’s motorcycle near Labaid Hospital at Dhanmondi on October 25, 2020 when he and his wife were returning to their Mohammadpur residence from Nilkhet.
Later, some people, including Irfan, came out of the car and physically assaulted Wasif and verbally abused his wife.
The Navy officer filed a case at Dhanmondi Police Station, naming four people including Irfan. The three other accused are AB Siddique Dipu, 45, Md Zahid, 35, and Md Mizanur Rahman, 30. All of them are behind bars now.
On October 26, 2020, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) detained Irfan from his father’s Devdas Lane residence in Old Dhaka. Two firearms, 38 walkie-talkies and liquor were seized from his house during the drive.
He was suspended from the post of councillor the next day. He has been facing four more cases.
He was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for keeping walkie-talkies illegally and another six months for possessing illegal liquor on October 26, 2020 by a mobile court led by Rab.
