Prime minister Sheikh Hasina today paid tribute to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the occasion of the historic Mujibnagar Day. She paid homage by placing a wreath at Bangabandhu’s portrait in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhanmondi, Dhaka this morning. After laying the wreath, the prime minister stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect to the memory of Bangabandhu, the architect of independence. Flanked by central leaders of Awami League, Sheikh Hasina, also the president of the party, placed another wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu on behalf of AL. On this day in 1971, Bangladesh’s first government in exile was formed at the Baidyanathtala mango orchard in Meherpur, under the then Kushtia district. The place was later renamed Mujibnagar as a tribute to Bangabandhu who had been declared as the president of the government-in-exile. Syed Nazrul Islam was appointed the acting president in the absence of Bangabandhu. Tajuddin Ahmad was appointed the first prime minister, while captain M Mansur Ali and AHM Quamaruzzaman were made cabinet members. The successful leadership of the core cabinet steered the Liberation War to victory on December 16 that year.  

Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the United Nations has observed the historic Mujibnagar Day. At the beginning of the programme on Tuesday, the President of the Mujibnagar government, the greatest Bengali of all time, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Vice President Syed Nazrul Islam and Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmad, including the late members of the government, four national leaders and three million martyrs of the Great Liberation War were remembered. Special prayers were offered for the forgiveness of their souls. Later, the speeches of the President and the Prime Minister were read out. A documentary video on the Mujibnagar government was screened at the programme. Ambassador Rabab Fatima, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations, gave a welcome address on the occasion. She explained the significance of Mujibnagar Day and the history of how this temporary capital was named as Mujibnagar after Bangabandhu. She said, “After the beginning of the freedom struggle through the historic speech of March 7, the Father of the Nation declared independence on March 26. Under the leadership of the Father of the Nation, the Bengali nation jumped into the War of Liberation. Therefore, the Mujibnagar government had no choice but to establish the institutional recognition and legal basis of the great Liberation War. The Mujib Nagar government formed on 10 April was officially sworn in on 17 April: READ: Govt let loose police against BNP, alleges Rizvi Referring to the leadership, strategy and timely direction of the Mujibnagar government, Ambassador Fatima said that the Liberation War was moving towards a successful conclusion in the quickest time. "The biggest challenge of the Mujibnagar government was to bring the world public opinion to Bangladesh by tackling the hostile environment. This government took several timely steps to bring the world community in favor of Bangladesh. Bengali diplomats working in Pakistani embassies around the world, including in India, took immediate steps to leave Pakistan and show allegiance to the Mujibnagar government." She called upon the new generation to highlight the history of Mujibnagar government, the history and significance of the great liberation war. "Under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, we will contribute from our own position to further strengthen Bangladesh's position in the international arena, including the United Nations. May this be our pledge on Mujibnagar Day," she said. All the officials and employees of the mission participated in the event.

The historic Mujibnagar Day was observed at Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC on Sunday in a befitting manner, recalling the historic ceremonial oath-taking of the first  government of independent Bangladesh on 17th April in 1971. The day's programs began with placing of a floral wreath by Ambassador M Shahidul Islam at the bust of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the Bangabandhu Corner of the Embassy. The Prime Minister called upon all to uphold the great ideals of the Father of the Nation and the spirit of the Liberation War on the 51st anniversary of Mujibnagar Day. “Let us work together to build the hunger-poverty-free and prosperous 'Golden Bangladesh' as dreamt by the Father of the Nation by resisting all immediate conspiracies” she said in her message. The government has announced April 17 as a public holiday at  Mujibnagar in Meherpur district marking the historic Mujibnagar Day.  The Public Administration Ministry  issued a notification in this regard on Wednesday. The  holiday has been declared as part of the national programme organised by the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs. Bangladesh Ambassador to the United States M Shahidul Islam has said Mujibnagar embodies the pride of the Bangalee nation in the struggle for freedom from the occupational forces. He paid deep tribute to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, three million martyrs and two lakh tortured mothers and sisters. The Ambassador, while addressing a discussion meeting, said Bangladesh earned liberation not only by sacrifice but also by valor of the freedom fighters. Later, Ambassador Shahidul Islam, along with the diplomats working in the Embassy, placed a floral wreath at the bust of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The Embassy of Bangladesh in Seoul on Saturday observed the historic Mujibnagar Day with due solemnity and fervor. The event was attended by the officials of the Embassy at virtual platform. The day’s programme commenced with the reading out of the verses from the Holy Scriptures. A special prayer was offered for the salvation of the martyrs of the Liberation War and also for the peace and prosperity of the country. The Embassy officers then read out the messages of the President and Prime Minister. A documentary on the background and significance of the Mujibnagar Government was also screened in the programme. Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Muhammad Imran on Friday highlighted the significance of the historic Mujibnagar Day that falls on April 17 and said the Mujibnagar government played a historic role in the freedom struggle of Bangladesh. "As an independent nation, we’re forever indebted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Father of the greatest Bengali nation of all time," he said. Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi observed the day in advance on Friday with due dignity. To mark the Day, the High Commission organised a discussion meeting at Bangabandhu Hall of the Chancery in the afternoon with the High Commissioner in chair. With the formation of the Mujibnagar government, a constitutional government started its journey under the leadership of public representatives elected in the 1970 election to conduct the Liberation War, he said. “On the Mujibnagar Day, I call upon the people of the country to perform their respective duties properly in building the country, being imbued with the spirit of the Liberation War,” said President Hamid. The President hoped that the present generation would be able to know the real history of the Liberation War and contribute towards building ‘Sonar Bangla’ dreamt by Bangabandhu. On the occasion of the 50 years of the Mujibnagar Day, the PM urged all to uphold the country’s independence that was earned in exchange for the supreme sacrifices of 30 lakh martyrs and the dignity of two lakh women.
