BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman was warmly received by senior leaders of the party as he arrived at Dhaka airport with his family on Thursday, ending 17 years of self-exile. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir along with members of the party’s Standing Committee welcomed him at the airport. Tarique Rahman exchanged greetings and embraced the leaders. Tarique Rahman heads to Dhaka from Sylhet Dr Zubaida Rahman’s mother Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu welcomed Tarique Rahman with a floral garland. Private television channels broadcast live coverage of his arrival from the moment he disembarked from the flight. He later spent some time at the lounge exchanging greetings with relatives. To mark his homecoming, the BNP has arranged a mass reception at the 36 July Expressway area along the 300 feet road in the capital’s Purbachal. A large stage has been set up with bamboo and wood on the north side of the Kuril intersection road. After leaving the airport, Tarique Rahman is scheduled to travel with his family and party leaders to the reception venue. Following the programme, he is expected to visit BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at Evercare Hospital.  

As part of the party’s plan to hold a series of virtual meetings with its senior leaders to discuss the country’s overall situation and work out its next course of action, BNP top leaders sat with a group of members of the party chairperson’s advisory council on Friday. Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and some standing committee members were present at the meeting with its chairperson’s advisers chaired by party acting chairman Tarique Rahman, BNP acting office secretly Syed Emran Saleh Prince told UNB. Also read: Fakhrul regrets BNP’s failure to revitalise organisations He said around 15 advisers of the BNP chairperson joined the first-ever such meeting that began around 3:30pm and gave their opinions about the party’s next course of action under the current situation of the country. He said the party top leaders will hold a virtual meeting of another batch of 15 advisors of BNP chairperson on Sunday. “After the meetings with the chairperson’s advisers, our top leaders will hold meetings with party vice chairmen." There are 30 vice chairmen in the party’s central committee while the chairperson’s advisory council has 78 members.
