CU student assault: 5 BCL activists remanded
Five activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) were placed on a 2-day police remand each on Tuesday in a case filed over the sexual harassment of a female student at Chittagong University.
Chattogram Judicial Magistrate Farzana Akter passed the order after police sought a 7-day remand for the arrestees, said Ruhul Amin Sabuj, officer-in-charge of Hathajari Model Police Station.
Those remanded were Mohammad Azim, 23, a second-year student of History department of CU, Nurul Absar alias Babu, 22, second year student of Anthropology department of CU , Nur Hossain alias Shaon, 22, a first year student of Hathazari Government College, and Masud Rana alias Masud, 22, and Saiful Islam a second year student of the same college.
On July 17, a female student was sexually assaulted by five youths while she was going to the Botanical Garden from Pritilata Hall of the campus with her friend around 10pm.

The goons also captured the incident on video and threatened to make it viral. Later, they fled with the mobile phones and wallets of the two students.
A five-member body was formed to investigate the assault after the female student filed a written complaint to the proctor.
A case was also filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act accusing five people.
On July 19, after the university authorities set the time limit for female students to enter the residential hall before 10 pm after the incident students started a movement against the decision.
Since hundreds of CU students have been staging protests, holding human chains every day on the campus demanding justice for the female student.

Shahjahanpur double murder: Second suspect put on 1-day police remand
A Dhaka court on Friday placed Arfanullah Damal, the second suspect in the murder of an Awami League politician and a female college student in Shahjahanpur, on one-day police remand.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Begum Yeasmin Ara passed the order.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detectives arrested Arfanullah conducting a drive in the city’s Kamalapur area on Thursday night, said Rifat Mohammad Shamim, deputy commissioner of the detective branch (Motijheel division).
A gun was seized from his possession, he told UNB.
A case was filed against Arfanullah under the Arms Act at the Motijheel police station today.
On the night of March 24, AL politician Zahidul Islam Tipu, who was on a microbus, and Samia Afrin Priti, a 22-year-old college student, who was returning home on a rickshaw, were killed in firing in front of Islami Bank Hospital.
Tipu was a former general secretary of the AL Motijheel committee and Priti was a student of Begum Badrunnesa Government College. Tipu’s driver was also injured in the firing.
They were all stuck in a traffic jam in the area when a biker wearing a helmet and a mask appeared from nowhere and fired at them.

The next day, a case was filed against unidentified people over the double murder.
On March 27, police arrested Akash, 34, the prime accused in the double murder case from Bogura district. The next day, a Dhaka court placed Akash on a seven-day police remand for custodial interrogation.

Suspended cop remanded again
A court here on Monday placed a suspended constable of Benapole Port Police Station on a five-day remand again in a case filed against him allegedly for providing confidential information to Indian police.
