29 indicted for killing Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah
A Cox’s Bazar court on Sunday started official trial of Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah murder case by framing charges against 29 accused.
District and Session Court Judge Mohammad Ismail framed the charges during a hearing on the charge sheet submitted by police in the case.
Fifteen of the 29 accused were present at the court during the hearing while others remained absconding till date, said Public Prosecutor Faridul Alam.

On June 13, police pressed charges against the 29 accused after an eight-month long investigation in this case.
On September 29 last year, Mohib Ullah, chairman of Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights (ARSPH), was killed by some gunmen at his office.
They fired four shots at Mohib Ullah and fled the scene using a lane behind Mohib Ullah’s house.
The next day, police filed a case following a complaint from his brother Habib Ullah.

Mohib Ullah murder: ARSA commander held
Armed Police Battalion (APBn) has arrested the chief commander of Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) Ulama branch, who issued the fatwa for the assassination of Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah, from Ukhiya rohingya camp of Cox’s Bazar.
The arrestee has been identified as Zokoria, 55, of Lambasia camp-1 of Ukhiya.
APBn members held Zokoria after a four-month of effort from Lambasia camp.
He went into hiding during a raid on the camp area after Mohib Ullah's assassination, confirmed SP Naimul Haque, commander of the 14th Armed Police Battalion, on Sunday morning.

Zakaria had a rivalry with Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah. He is considered as the top adviser to the Rohingya camp's perpetrators, said the official.
SP Naimul also said Zokoria came to Bangladesh from Myanmar in 2015. Later, he went back there again. As a refugee in 2016, he started living in the Lambasia area. Since 2020, he has been serving as the Chief Commander of the Ulama branch of ARSA in the Kutupalong camp area.
Legal processes are underway against him, he added.
So far, ten Rohingya men have been arrested in this case. Of them, two gave confessional statements of involvement in the murder before the court.
Commander of APBn-14 SP Naimul Haque said that during primary interrogation of the accused Aziz spoke of a total of 19 Rohingya miscreants being involved in the murder plan, "and of them five, including him, were members of the killing squad".
On September 29 last year, another arrestee Murshid called Mohib to the ARSPH office to discuss Rohingya repatriation issues and informed other members of the squad, said SP Naimul quoting Azizul.

On September 30, police filed a case over Mohib Ullah’s murder, following a complaint from his brother Habib Ullah.

Mohib Ullah Murder: Accused Elias makes confessional statement
Md Elias, one of accused in Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah’s murder case, has made confessional statement before a Cox’s Bazar court.
The accused was produced before Cox’s Bazar Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court on Saturday after completing a three-day remand, said Cox’s Bazar court police sources.

Chief Judicial Magistrate court Judge Md Helal Uddin recorded his confessional statement under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
On October 3, 14-Armed Police Battalion (APBn) arrested Elias from Kutupalong Rohingya Camp-5 during a drive.
Unknown assailants gunned down Mohib, head of Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights (ARSPH) on September 29.
On September 30, police filed a case over Mohib Ullah’s murder following a complaint from Mohib Ullah’s brother Habib Ullah.

On October 1, another suspect Mohammad Selim,33, was arrested from a Kutupalong camp and was later handed over to Ukhiya police station by APBn members.
In the early hour of October 2, suspect Abdus Salam,32, and Jiaur Rahman,32 were arrested from another Rohingya camp in Ukhiya. Later in the evening Ukhiya police arrested Shawkat Ullah,23, another Rohingya suspect from Kutupalong camp.
Later, Cox’s Bazar Senior Judicial Magistrate Tamanna Farah placed the five arrestees on 3-day remand each.

Mohib Ullah killers to face justice, security at camps to be heightened: Home Minister
The killers of Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah will be brought to justice soon, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has said.
The Home Minister said this on Sunday during a meeting on the Durgo Puja security arrangements at the ministry's conference room.

Adding that an investigation was underway to find the cause of Mohib Ullah's murder, he said that the suspects will be brought to book soon.
Mentioning Mohib Ullah as vocal for the Rohingyas, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said that he always spoke about their repatriation.

He said that the government has been investigating to find out whether any foreign agents were trying to make the situation turbulent in the refugee camp.
About increasing the security in the camps, he informed that barbed wire fence is being installed around the Rohingya camps which will be completed in a few days.Watchtowers at Rohingya camps are also being set to ensure high security, he added.

Mohib Ullah murder: Another Rohingya suspect detained
Armed Police Battalion (APBn) has detained another Rohingya man from Ukhiya on Sunday over suspicion of his being involved in the killing of Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah raising the number of arrestees to five.
The 5th arrestee was named as Md Ilias,35, a resident of Kutupalong camp-5.
Tipped off a drive was conducted at the camp around 12pm and Ilias was held while trying to run away, said SP Naimul Haque, commander of the 14th Armed Police Battalion.
With this, five suspects have been arrested since the murder on September 29.

Earlier on Friday two Rohingya men Mohammad Selim,33, and Shawkat Ullah,23, were arrested and on Saturday another two Rohingya men Abdus Salam,32, and Jiaur Rahman,32, were taken into custody. All were arrested from Kutupalong Rohingya camps.
A Cox’s Bazar court on Sunday placed Mohammad Selim and Shawkat Ullah on a three-day remand for interrogation about over the killing.
On Thursday night, police registered a murder case following a complaint from Mohib Ullah’s brother Habib Ullah, said officer-in-charge Sanjur Morshed.

Mohib Ullah murder: 2 placed on 3-day remand
A Cox’s Bazar court on Sunday placed two people on a three-day remand in a case over the killing Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah.
Cox’s Bazar Senior Judicial Magistrate Tamanna Farah passed the order in the morning.

Those remanded are—Mohamamd Selim alias Lamba Selim and Shawkat Ullah.
Earlier on Saturday, police produced them before the judge with a 7-day remand prayer, said court inspector Chandan Kumar Chakrawarty.
Four suspects have so far been arrested in connection with Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah’s murder at Lambashia camp-1 in Ukhiya.
Shawkat was arrested on Saturday afternoon from a Kutupalong Rohingya camp, said officer-in-charge of Ukhiya police station Sanjur Morshed.

4 held over Mohib Ullah murder; 7-day remand sought for 2
Four suspects have so far been arrested in connection with Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah’s murder at Lambashia camp-1 in Ukhiya.
Of them, Selim and Shawkat were presented before Cox’s Bazar Judicial Magistrate’s court on Saturday as Ukhiya police sought a seven-day remand to interrogate them.
The court set Sunday to hear the remand plea, said sub-sub-inspector Chandan Kumar Chakrawarty at the court.
Shawkat was arrested on Saturday afternoon from a Kutupalong Rohingya camp, said officer-in-charge of Ukhiya police station Sanjur Morshed.

Since Mohib Ullah’s murder, patrol by police and APBn personnel been beefed up at the Rohingya camps, the SP added.

Rohingya leader's killing: 1 suspect held
The Armed Police Battalion on Friday arrested a Rohingya man on suspicion of his being involved in the killing of Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah in Cox’s Bazar.
The arrestee was identified as Md Selim alias Lomba Selim, 27, a Rohingya citizen living in Ukhiya Rohingya camp.

SP Naimul Haque, commander of the 14th Armed Police Battalion, said APBN members arrested the suspect from Camp-6 at Kutupalong in Ukhiya upazila around 11am.
Later, he was handed over to Ukhikya Police Station, said the SP.
Earlier on Thursday night, police have registered a murder case in connection with the killing of Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah at Ukhiya camp in Cox's Bazar on Wednesday night.
The FIR for murder was filed against unknown persons at the Ukhiya police station on on a complaint from Mohib Ullah’s brother Habib Ullah, said officer-in-charge Sanjur Morshed.

UN seeks proper probe into Rohingya leader's killing
The United Nations (UN) has condemned the killing of Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah and sought a proper investigation into it.
Mohib (44) was allegedly shot to death at a Rohingya camp in Cox's Bazaar by unknown gunmen on September 29.

"The United Nations urges the Bangladesh authorities to undertake an investigation and to hold those responsible to account," said Stephanie Tremblay, Associate Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General.
The UN also urged continued strong international support for the protection and support to the Rohingya communities anywhere in the world, including in Bangladesh.

"The UN continues to call for the voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable return of Rohingya refugees and internally displaced persons. The UN will continue to firmly provide its support in this endeavour."
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) also expressed its deep shock and sadness at the killing of Mohib Ullah.

US calls for 'full & transparent' probe into Mohib's murder
The United States has called for a "full and transparent" probe into prominent Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah's killing, with an aim of bringing the perpetrators of the crime to justice.
Mohib (44) was allegedly shot to death at a Rohingya camp in Bangladesh by unknown gunmen on September 29.

American Secretary of State Antony J Blinken said in a statement that the US is "deeply saddened" and "disturbed" by the murder of the Rohingya Muslim advocate and community leader.
"Mohib Ullah was a brave and fierce advocate for the human rights of Rohingya Muslims around the world. We urge a full and transparent investigation into his death with the goal of holding the perpetrators of this heinous crime accountable," he said.
The US Secretary of State said that Mohib travelled to the Human Rights Council in Geneva and to the United States to speak at the Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom in 2019.

"During his trip, he shared his experiences with the President and Vice President and spoke together with other survivors of religiously motivated persecution," Secretary Blinken said.
"We will honor his work by continuing to advocate for Rohingya and lift up the voices of members of the community in decisions about their future," he added.
