70-year-old inmate dies at Chattogram while undergoing cancer treatment
A 70-year-old inmate died on Saturday at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) while receiving treatment for cancer.
The deceased was identified as Abdur Rahman Mia, who suffered from multiple serious illnesses.
Abdur Rahman Mia was arrested in a case under Kotwali Police Station and sent to Chattogram Central Jail on November 17, 2025.
His health deteriorated, and on December 24, he was transferred to CMCH for advanced treatment, where doctors admitted him after examinations.
After nearly a month of treatment, he was discharged and returned to the jail on January 18, 2026.
Medical reports showed he had lung cancer that had spread to the brain, high blood pressure, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Following doctors’ advice, he was readmitted to CMCH on January 26. He died at 11:30 am on Saturday (January 31) while under medical care.
Chattogram Central Jail Superintendent Syed Shah Sharif confirmed the death.
Abdur Rahman Mia was a resident of Uttar Agrabad, Purbo Muhuri Para of Double Mooring in Chattogram.
Some sources said he was a vice-president of Ward 24 South Agrabad Awami League, though no official documents were seen.

The hospital death certificate listed the cause of death as carcinoma of the lung with brain metastasis, along with high blood pressure, COPD, and diabetes.
Syed Shah Sharif, the jailer of Chattogram Central Jail said, “The higher authorities have been informed about the inmate’s death and the necessary legal procedures are underway.”

Swechchhasebak Dal leader killed in ‘BNP factional clash’ in Narayanganj
A leader of Swechchhasebak Dal has been killed in a clash allegedly between two BNP faction at Trishkania in Kanchan municipality area in Rupganj upazila.
The deceased was identified as Azhar Uddin, 48, senior vice-president of the Swechchhasebak Dal’s Ward No. 9 unit.
Three others— Sabuj, Ripon and Emrat — were injured in the clash and are receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Local sources said an internal discussion meeting of BNP and its associate bodies was held at the Ward No. 9 office on Friday evening.
During the meeting, an argument broke out between Ward Swechchhasebak Dal president Sabuj and Jubo Dal activist Rajib Hossain over the placement of names in a programme list.

At one stage, Rajib and his associates allegedly attacked Sabuj and Azhar with punches.
Azhar fell to the ground after being critically injured.
He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition where doctors declared him dead.
Rupganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shabzel Hossain said Azhar was killed during a scuffle stemming from a dispute over name placement in a party programme.
The body has been sent to the morgue, he said.

5 farmers killed in Naogaon road crash
Five farmer were killed when a dump truck crashed into a battery-run van on Mohadevpur-Patnitala road in Mohadevpur upazila of Naogaon district on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Biren Pahan, 35, son of Koko Pahan, Ujjal Pahan, 38, son of Naren Pahan, Bipul Pahan, 25, son of Jhatu Pahan, Sanju Urao, 45, son of Marang Orao and Biplab Bahan, 22, son of Jhatu Pahan of Nurpur area of the upazila.
The accident occurred at Patkhathi early in the morning when the dump truck hit the battery-run van carrying five people while they were heading towards Mohadevpur haat for selling their produced turmeric, leaving two dead on the spot and three others injured, said Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Mohadevapura Police Station.
The injured were taken to Mohadevpur Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared him dead.
Naogaon farmers face uncertainty as unseasonal rain hits early crops
On information, police recovered the bodies.
Police could not arrest anyone as the dump truck driver and his helper managed to flee the scene.
Efforts are on to arrest the driver and his helper, said police.

Dhaka’s train link with northern region resumes after 3 hours
Train services between Dhaka and the northern parts of the country remained suspended for three hours on Saturday following the derailment of a bogie in Dangapara of Hakimpur upazila in Dinajpur district.
Zulfiker Ali, Officer-in-Charge of Bangladesh Railway Police, Parbatipur, said a bogie of Rajshahi-bound Barendra Express coming from Chilahati derailed around 7:42 am after a hook connecting the bogies broke, disrupting train services between Dhaka and the northern region.

At least five people were injured while trying to jump off the train after the accident with two of them sustaining critical injuries.
Train services on the route resumed around 11:45 am after a salvage train removed the bogie, said OC Zulfiker.

Journalist’s wife found dead in Rajshahi, husband injured
The wife of a journalist was found dead while the journalist was injured at their rented house at Hargram Bazar in Rajshahi city on Friday evening.
The deceased was identified as Roushan Ara, wife of Golam Kibria Kamal, 60, alias Kamal Malik, deputy editor of local daily ‘Rajshahi Sangbad’.
Gaziur Rahman, additional deputy commissioner and spokesperson of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, said the couple used to live on the third floor of a three-storey house in the area and local fire service men rushed to the spot after getting a phone call from national emergency number 999.
Police rushed to the house around 7pm and found the door locked from inside. The door was later broken open with the help of the fire service.
Roushan Ara was found lying on the floor while Golam Kibria Kamal was found injured on the bed.
Both were taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Billal Uddin, physician of the emergency department, said Roushan was brought dead at the hospital and a piece of cloth was found wrapped around her neck.
However, the exact cause of death would be confirmed after an autopsy, he said.
He added that Kamal had injuries to his hands and legs and had reportedly consumed a chemical substance.
His condition is critical and he has been kept under close observation.
RU female student found dead in Rajshahi
Editor of Rajshahi Sangbad Ahsan Habib said they rushed to the hospital after learning about the incident. “The exact circumstances are still unclear. Kamal Malik is in a critical condition with injuries to his hands and legs and is being taken to the ICU,” he said.
A CID crime scene team visited and examined the spot.
“The investigation is ongoing. The door was locked from inside. At this stage, it appears the incident occurred inside the home but the exact details will be known after investigation,” additional deputy commissioner Gaziur said.

RU female student found dead in Rajshahi
Police recovered the body of a female student of Rajshahi University (RU) hanging from the ceiling of a house adjacent to the university area in Meherchandi of Rajshahi on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Zobaida Islam Ety, a student of the Department of Social Work.
Manirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Chandrima Police Station, said Zobaida had been living in a rented house in the area.
Motorcycle rider killed in truck accident in Sylhet
Zobaida was found hanging from the ceiling of her room on Friday evening and was later taken to the emergency department of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead, said RU Proctor Mahbubur Rahman.
Police suspected that Ety might have committed suicide.
An investigation is underway in this regard, the OC said.

Case filed against BNP candidate among hundreds over killing of Jamaat leader in Sherpur
A case has been filed against BNP candidate Mahmudul Haque Rubel and more than 290 others in connection with the killing of Jamaat leader Rezaul Karim in Jhenaigati Upazila of Sherpur.
The complaint was lodged by the victim’s wife at Jhenaigati Police Station, sources from the family and police said.
The incident occurred on Wednesday during a manifesto distribution program of rival candidates in Jhenaigati, part of the Sherpur-3 constituency (Sreebardi and Jhenaigati). Clashes between BNP and Jamaat supporters led to the death of Rezaul Karim.

Motorcycle rider killed in truck accident in Sylhet
A young man was killed on Friday afternoon after being run over by a truck in Golapganj, Sylhet, police said.
The accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. near the Government MC Academy.
The deceased, Shanaj Ahmed, 25, son of Makhan Mia of Sripur Rampasha village in Bishwanath, worked as a driver for a poultry farm in Sylhet city.
According to eyewitnesses and police, Shanaj had attended a gathering in Phulbari Purbo Para, Golapganj, and was returning on another person’s motorcycle. Approaching the Government MC Academy, he lost control of the bike, hit a divider, and fell under an oncoming truck, dying instantly at the scene.
Golapganj Model Police and fire service teams later reached the site, completed the formalities, and took the body to Golapganj Model Police Station.
Golapganj Model Police Sub-Inspector Anupam confirmed the incident.

Fire breaks out in women’s ward at Sylhet Osmani Hospital
A fire broke out on Friday night in the women’s ward on the fourth floor of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, spreading panic among patients, attendants, and hospital staff, officials said.
The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m., reportedly due to an electrical short circuit. Smoke spread quickly, prompting people to move to safer areas.
Fire service units responded promptly and brought the blaze under control. No major damage was reported, and hospital services on the affected floor were temporarily disrupted.
An ambulance driver was injured while helping to extinguish the fire, hospital sources said.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Saiful Islam confirmed the incident and said the fire service acted swiftly to control the situation. The cause of the fire and extent of damage are under investigation. Additional police and Ansar personnel were deployed to ensure safety at the hospital.
The situation has now returned to normal.

3 arrested for staging robbery to steal expat’s Tk 10 Lakh
Munshiganj Police on Friday said they have arrested three people in connection with a staged robbery in which Tk 10 lakh sent by an expatriate was stolen.
Tk 1 lakh has been recovered so far, and a motorcycle used in the fake robbery has been seized.
The arrested are Shahjalal Haldar alias Saha, 38, Khokon Haldar, 32, and Iqbal Hossain, 30.
Munshiganj Superintendent of Police Md. Menhazul Alam said in a press briefing on Friday that on December 28, Shahjalal Haldar withdrew the money sent by expatriate Kaiyum Khan from City Bank at Rikabi Bazar, Munshiganj Sadar. He then left for Serajabad in Tongibari Upazila with his wife and the expatriate’s sister, Halima Begum, on a battery-powered rickshaw.
Police said that near Rishibari Bridge, two masked men on an unnumbered motorcycle snatched the bag containing the money. Halima Begum filed a case at Tongibari Police Station.
Investigation revealed that the incident was premeditated. Shahjalal Haldar had orchestrated the fake robbery in collusion with Khokon Haldar and Iqbal Hossain. They offered no resistance at the scene and later divided the stolen money among themselves. The remaining cash is being tracked for recovery.
