Mobile phone seized from death-row convict in Kashimpur jail
Kashimpur Central Jail authorities in Gazipur have seized a mobile phone set from Nur Hossain, a death-row convict in the Narayanganj 7-murder case, and formed a 3-member panel to probe the matter.
Nur Hossain, former Narayanganj City Corporation Councillor, has been in jail since 2017 after he was sentenced to death in sensational Narayanganj seven-murder case.
Jail superintendent of Kashimpur Central Jail-2 Abdul Jalil on Saturday said a three-member committee, headed by Deputy Superintendent of Prisons Umme Salma, was formed to probe the incident.

There are three inmates, including Nur, 50, in the Kashimpur Central Jail part-2 condemn cell. Tipped off, the jail authorities recovered a mobile phone set after searching the cell on January 5, he said.
The other members of the committee are Chief Jailer Asadur Rahman and Deputy Jailer Nurul Mobin.
The committee has been asked to submit its report by January 11.
A court of Narayanganj on January 16, 2017 sentenced 26 people, including three sacked Rab officials and ex-city councillor Nur Hossain, to death and nine others to different jail terms in the two cases filed over the murder incident.
Narayanganj 7-murder case
On April 27, 2014, Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam, his three associates and driver were abducted from Fatullah area of Narayanganj.
At the same time, senior lawyer at the district judge court Chandan Kumar Sarkar and his driver were abducted on their way to the capital.

Three days after their abduction, the bodies of six of them, including Nazrul and Chandan, were recovered from the Shitalakhya River.
The following day, the body of Nazrul's car driver, Jahangir, was recovered from the river.

Ctg: 10 medical interns get stuck in lift for 45 mins
Ten medical interns had a harrowing time on Friday night after being stuck in an elevator of the Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) building in Chattogram for 45 minutes.
All the 10 were rescued around 9.45pm on Friday, fire service officials said on Saturday.
Md Shahidul Islam, senior station officer of Chandanpura Fire Service and Civil Defense, said that the 10 interns of Bangabandhu Memorial Hospital got trapped in the elevator between floors of the BMA building around 9pm on Friday.

Later, they dialled 999, seeking help. A team of fire service personnel soon rushed to the spot and got them out after cutting the door of the elevator, he said.
The elevator has the capacity of carrying six people but the 10 had boarded it, Shahidul said.

Awami League activist dies of injuries at Rajshahi hospital
An Awami League activist who sustained injuries in poll-related violence in Jhenaidah died during treatment at Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital on Saturday morning.
The deceased was identified as Abdur Rahim, a local Awami League activist of Krishnanagar village. He was injured in union parishad election-related violence at Shailkupa in Jhenaidah.
According to police, supporters of independent chairman candidate Zulfiqar Kaishar Tipu thrashed Abdur Rahim, who was campaigning for boat symbol candidate Mahmudul Hasan Mamun, at Katlagari Bazar in Sarutia union of Shailkupa upazila during the fifth phase of UP election on January 5.

An injured Rahim was soon taken to Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex from where he was referred him to Kushtia General Hospital.
As his condition deteriorated, he was sent to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital for better treatment, where he died on Saturday morning.
So far, four Awami League workers have been killed in attacks and clashes in different villages of the union.

Section 144 imposed in B’baria
The district administration in Brahmanbaria has imposed Section 144 on Saturday to prevent any untoward incident after BNP and Juba League planned rallies at the same venue. It was announced through a notification signed by Deputy Commissioner Hayat Ud Daula Khan on Friday evening.

Khagrachhari celebrates 38th anniversary of BTV’s ‘Bonophul Theke Lok Lokaloye’
State-run Bangladesh Television on Friday celebrated the 38th anniversary of its programme ‘Bonophul Theke Lok Lokaloye’, an initiative to preserve and develop the culture and heritage of the ethnic groups.
The cultural organizers and artists of Khagrachhari district arranged a program in celebration of the popular show at the Khagrachhari Press Club.
In this event, Bandarban artist and organizer Chathuipru Marma, Khagrachhari artist and organizer Amelie Dewan and Anchairi Marma, Painila Chowdhury Rangamati artist and organizer Trishna Tripura were honoured in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the development of the culture of small ethnic groups for 38 years.

Navy man dies from electrocution in Ctg
A member of Bangladesh Navy was electrocuted to death at Karnaphuli in Chattogram early Friday.
The deceased was identified as Wahidul Islam Riaz, 25, son of Zafar Ahmed of Lakhsmipur district.
Police said Wahidul was accidentally electrocuted after getting in contact with an electric wire in the early hours of Friday at Banauja Julda Nirvik basecamp.

Later, he was rushed to a Naval Hospital where the doctor declared him dead, said Dulal Mahmud, officer-in-charge (OC) of Karnaphuli Police Station.
The body was kept in Chittagong Medical College and Hospital morgue for autopsy, the OC added.

Athlete dies completing marathon in Chattogram
An athlete in Chattogram died soon after completing a 21.1 km half marathon race in Chattogram’s Patenga sea beach.
The deceased was identified as Jamil Hossain, 45, son of Moazzem Hossain of Nawabpara area of Patuakhali.

The incident occurred at 9 am on Friday (January 6) after the Chattogram City Half Marathon at the sea beach.
Kabir Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Patenga Police Station said, Jamil fell ill at the finishing point of the marathon. He was given first aid at the Navy Hospital from where he was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. There the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Post UP-polls violence: 6 including winner and loser arrested in Satkhira
Police have arrested six people including the elected and the defeated candidates of the 5th phase of UP election at Khajra union in Satkhira over post-poll violence.
The arrestees were identified as newly-elected chairman Shahnewaj Dalim and his rival Wahidul Islam, formar chairman Ruhul Quddus along with villagers Golam Mostafa, Mostakin Molla and Golam Rabbi.

Police said they made the arrest on Friday dawn after a drive at Godaipur and Khajra of the district.
On Thursday, post-poll violence involving supporters of the victorious and defeated candidates left at least 10 people injured, four of them by bullets, at Khajra union in Satkhira.
Golam Kabir, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ashashuni police station, said police reportedly fired shots to disperse the rival groups.
Additional police personnel were deployed in the area, the OC said.

Earlier, Shahnewaz Dalim filed a case against 16 people including his rival Wahidul Islam. On the other hand, Wahidul Islam's chief election agent Ruhul Quddus filed a case against 15 people, including newly elected chairman Shahnewaz Dalim, said OC Golam Kabir.
The arrestees were sent to jail through Satkhira court on Friday noon, the OC added.

Security guard dies after falling off vessel in Sitakunda
A security guard died after falling from an old ship while working at a shipyard in Sitakunda of Chattogram early Friday.
The deceased was identified as Rono Bikram Tripura, 27, son of Dharendra Tripura of Panchhari of Khagrachhari district.
Police said Rono Bikram got seriously injured when he fell off the ship at SL Shipyard in Madambibirhat area of Sitakunda around 8am.

He was rushed to Chittagong Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) where the doctor declared him dead, said Alauddin, sub-inspector (SI) of CMCH outpost.
The body was sent to CMCH morgue for an autopsy, said the SI.

Rape in Chattogram: step father held
Rab have arrested a person on Thursday night for allegedly raping his teenaged stepdaughter in Chattogram's Hathazari.
The arrestee Ibrahim Hossain Parvez, 35, is the son of Nur Islam of Fatika village in Hathazari.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when the 10th grade school girl came to visit her mother.
Next day, her mother lodged a complaint in this regard.
RAB-7 senior assistant director (media) Nurul Abshar said, on the basis of the complaint Ibrahim was arrested on Thursday from Hathazari’s Madhyam Mirer Khil area.
