T20 World Cup: Rain poses threat as Bangladesh to take on Netherlands tomorrow
As Bangladesh are all set to take on the Netherlands to start their T20 World Cup 2022 campaign, a forecast of heavy rain poses a significant threat to the fate of the match.
According to media reports coming from Hobert, neither Bangladesh nor Netherlands were able to utilize their respective practice sessions due to heavy rain, and the same could happen to the match.
Bangladesh came to this year’s T20 World Cup with their fans not hoping for something memorable. Over the last couple of years, Bangladesh played 43 matches and won only 15 of them. Their most recent wins came against the UAE in a two-match series.
Ahead of the main event, Bangladesh played a warm-up match against Afghanistan and they suffered a similar fate — a defeat without offering any kind of effective resistance.
Just a few weeks before the T20 World Cup, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) appointed Sridharan Sriram as the T20 consultant of Bangladesh. The former Indian cricketer has done quite a few experiments with the team in the Asia Cup and in the Tri-Series in New Zealand.
After much experiment, Sridharan and the team management have done two last-minute changes to the World Cup squad adding Soumya Sarkar and Shoriful Islam, who were actually drafted as standby players, replacing underperforming Sabbir Rahman and Mohammad Saifuddin.

Before Taking the field in the World Cup, the opening pair has been the main point of concern for Bangladesh. According to the hints the team management has provided so far, Soumya Sarkar and Liton Das are most likely to open the innings for the Tigers.
The Tigers might go with three pacers — Taskin Ahmed, Mosatafizur Rahman and either of Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful Islam — and two spinners Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
While the threat of rain is still looming large, Bangladesh Captain Shakib said that Tigers are looking forward to having a great match against the pumped-up Netherlands who have done well in the first round of the World Cup.
“We had a very good preparation,” Shakib said in the pre-match press meet. “The four matches in New Zealand (in the Tri-Series) will help us, especially here in Hobart where the weather is a little similar to Christchurch. So, everyone is ready and excited for the match tomorrow.”
For the Netherlands, Bas de Leede, the right-arm pacer, has done well in the first round taking seven wickets in three matches. He can offer a tough challenge to the bigger teams in the Super 12s.
The match is scheduled to begin at 10am (Bangladesh time) tomorrow. Now, if the weather permits, the match is going to be a good chance for Bangladesh who have been searching for a win in the Super 12s of T20 World Cups for a long time.

T20 World Cup: India lose 3 early wickets chasing arch-rival Pakistan’s 160 runs
Pursuing 160 against Pakistan in their first match of the T20 World Cup 2022, India lost three early wickets today in Melbourne.
Pakistan batted first after losing the toss. Shan Masood and Iftikhar Ahmed hit a fifty each.
Apart from them, none of the other Pakistan batters was able to offer some challenge to Indian bowlers.
Babar Azam scored a duck while playing a straight delivery from Arshdeep Singh who also sent back the other opener Rizwan Ahmed for only four. It was a rare failure from both Pakistani openers.
For India, Arshdeep and Hardik Pandya bagged three wickets. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami took one wicket each.

T20 World Cup: Openers fall early as Pakistan bat first vs India
India have won the toss and opted to first against Pakistan in their T20 World Cup opener on Sunday in Melbourne. India made a flying start sending both the Pakistan openers back in the powerplay.
Pakistan, who were asked to bat first, lost their openers early.
Both Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan fell prey to Arshdeep Singh. While Babar suffered a first-ball duck, Rizwan posted only four off 12 balls.

The most anticipated match of the T20 World Cup 2022 between India and Pakistan is all set to be held on Sunday in Melbourne. Can India take revenge for their loss to Pakistan in the 2021 World Cup?

ICC T20 Word Cup: England make good start beating Afghanistan by 5 wickets
England made a good start in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup beating Afghanistan by five wickets in a Group A Super 12 match at the Perth Stadium in Australia on Saturday.
Chasing an easy target, England faced no trouble to score match winning 113 runs for the loss of five wicket in 18.1 overs.
Number five Liam Livingstone contributed the team highest 21-ball 29 runs featuring three boundaries, opener Alex Hales (19), another opener Jos Buttler (18), one down Dawid Malam (18) were the main contributors for the England reaching the double figures.
Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Mujeebur Rahman, Fareed Ahmed and Fazalhaq Farooqi took one wicket each conceding 16, 17, 22, 23 and 24 runs respectively,
Earlier sent into bat first, Afghanistan were dismissed cheaply for 112 runs against England
Afghanistan made a good start scoring 82 runs for 4 in 11.1 overs, but they were miserably bundled out for a poor total, losing remaining six wickets for just 30 runs in 8.5 overs against devastating bowling by Sam Curren.
After the dismissal two openers---Hazratullah Zazai (7) and Rahmatullah Gurbaz (10) --for 35 runs in 6.3 overs, one down Ibrahim Zardan pairing number four Usman Ghani repaired their early damage scoring 27 runs in the 3rd wicket stand.
Ibrahim Zardan scored the team highest run a ball 32 featuring three fours and a six while Usman Ghani contributed run a ball 30 hitting three boundaries.
Najibullah Zardan was the other notable Afghan batter reaching the double figure scoring 11-ball 13 runs with one six.
24-year old left arm medium fast bowler Samuel Matthew Curren grabbed five Afghan wickets conceding just 10 runs in his 3.4 overs spell and was adjudged the player of the match.
Experienced right arm fast medium bowler Ben Stokes and right arm fast bowler Mark Wood took two wickets each conceding 19 and 23 runs respectively, in their four-over bowling.
In their next matches, England will play Ireland while Afghanistan will face New Zealand both on October 26 in Melbourne.

T20 World Cup: India 'more prepared' for Pakistan this time
Rohit Sharma is confident India have learned from their dismal T20 World Cup campaign last year and will be more prepared for archrivals Pakistan in a blockbuster Group 2 opener Sunday.
The India captain said a key lesson from the 2021 tournament, which ended for his squad with a 10-wicket thrashing from Pakistan, was more emphasis on fine-tuning ahead of time.
So, the India squad arrived in Australia more than two weeks ago, initially training in Perth in Western Australia before crossing the continent for a warm-up game against defending champions and tournament hosts Australia in Brisbane.
Taking six wickets in the last two overs to edge Australia by six runs in the unofficial match at the Gabba, which followed recent series wins over South Africa and Australia in the shortest format of the international game, has boosted India's confidence as they seek to end a 15-year T20 title drought.
Rohit said the opportunity to play in different conditions in Western Australia and Queensland was important as it allowed those in the 15-man squad who had not played Down Under a chance to experience the variance in pitches and grounds.
Read: T20 World Cup 2022: Bangladesh’s past record with Super 12 opponents
"We wanted to change a lot of things that went wrong for us in the last World Cup. We managed to get some of those things right, for sure," he said. "We are pretty much starting in a good position right now, understanding what we need to do as a team."
Rohit said the bowling group and the batting group were clear on their strategies and needed to be backed up in the field.
"It is now time to execute those plans, those ideas," he said. "No team will be 100 percent right but we want to do as many things as possible right."
He conceded that the challenge posed by Pakistan, who were training at the MCG Saturday night, was significant given their recent matches.
The 10-wicket win at Dubai in the 2021 T20 World Cup aside, Pakistan responded from a loss to India in the group stages of the recent Asia Cup to post a five-wicket victory last month.
T20's top-ranked batter Mohammad Rizwan proved to be the match-winner for Pakistan in that encounter, just as he did in their last World Cup meeting when scoring an unbeaten 79 runs.
But Sharma said India had identified the strengths and weaknesses of the 2009 T20 World Cup champions.
"I don't want to use the word pressure, because pressure is constant. It doesn't change, ever," he said. "I would like to see this as a challenge. This Pakistan team is very challenging. All the Pakistan teams I have played against since 2007 till 2022 have been good."
The biggest threat to India's hopes of beginning the World Cup with a victory might not be Rizwan. Nor will the presence of Virat Kohli batting at No.3 be the biggest concern for Pakistan – should Melbourne's notoriously fickle weather continue.

T20 World Cup: New Zealand outclass Australia by 89 runs
In the first match of the Super 12s of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, New Zealand beat the current champions and hosts Australia by 89 runs on Saturday in Sydney.
Devon Conway made an unbeaten 92 for the Kiwis and their bowlers also played exceptionally well to seal the match.
New Zealand were asked to bat first after they lost the toss. Conway and Fin Allen proved they had no problem batting first— they posted 56 runs in the opening stand in only four overs. They smashed the Australian bowlers all around the ground in Sydney.
New Zealand never looked back from this blistering start. Allen was the first batter to get dismissed by the Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood for 42 off just 16 balls.
But Conway was firm at the other end of the wicket and continued to demolish the Australian bowling line. He batted until the end of the innings and smashed wonderful shots.
Read: T20 World Cup 2022: Bangladesh to face Netherlands on Oct 24
Conway ended on 92 off just 58 deliveries with seven fours and two sixes. He guided New Zealand to a massive total of 203 for three wickets.
In reply, the hosts were expected to respond well but surprisingly they could not do that on a surface that they know better than any participating team. They were completely outclassed by the Blackcaps.
The Australian batting line was broken down like a pack of cards. Glenn Maxwell and Pat Cummins were the only batters for the hosts to have past the 20-run mark. Veteran pacer Tim Southee and spinner Mitchell Santner scalped three wickets each for New Zealand. Australia, eventually, tumbled to 111 in 17.1 overs and lost the match by a massive margin of 89 runs.

T20 World Cup 2022: Bangladesh’s past record with Super 12 opponents
All five of Bangladesh’s opponents have been confirmed as they will begin their Super 12 round campaign with a match against the Netherlands on October 24 in Hobart. Little is expected from the Tigers given their recent international performances. Let's take a look at Bangladesh's records against the teams they will face in the T20 World Cup 2022 group stage.
Bangladesh's head-to-head record and expected outcomes against its Super 12s opponents
The Bangladesh team will play their first game against the Dutch national side on Monday (October 24). After that, they will take on South Africa, Zimbabwe, India, and Pakistan, respectively. Bangladesh have a realistic chance of reaching the semi-finals if they can win at least three matches. But can the Tigers put up a fighting display given their recent performances in the T20 format? Let’s take a glance at Bangladesh's T20I records over their opponents in the Super 12s.
Read: T20 World Cup 2022: Favourites to make it to the semifinals
Bangladesh vs Netherlands
Match details: October 24 | Venue: Bellerive Oval | Time: 10 a.m. (BST)The Tigers will face a less-strong Dutch side in their Twenty20 World Cup opener, which could be a blessing in disguise to find momentum. This is the fixture that everyone expects Bangladesh to win. So, the team Tigers can consider themselves favourites for the contest but shouldn’t undermine their opposition. The Netherlands finished second in their group in the first round, winning two and losing to Sri Lanka.
H2H Record: Bangladesh have faced the Netherlands three times and hold a 2-1 head-to-head record. The Tigers won the last meeting between the two sides in the 2016 World T20.
Bangladesh vs South Africa
Match details: October 27 | Venue: Sydney Cricket Ground | Time: 9 a.m. (BST)Bangladesh's next fixture would be against a strong South Africa team at the famous Sydney Cricket Ground. This would be one of the toughest matches for the Tigers as the Proteas players are more equipped for the Australian conditions. Bangladesh's team management has to chalk out an effective strategy which could potentially put the opposition under strain. However, South Africa are the overwhelming favourite for the contest.
H2H Record: Bangladesh have played seven T20Is against South Africa and have lost all of them. South Africa won by 6 wickets in the most recent meeting between the two sides in the 2021 ICC Twenty20 World Cup.
Bangladesh vs Zimbabwe
Match details: October 30 | Venue: The Gabba | Time: 9 a.m. (BST)The Bangladesh team will target Zimbabwe in their third fixture of the tournament to stay in contention for a top two finish in the points table. Despite losing a bilateral series 2-1 against Zimbabwe last July, Bangladesh will remain the favourite in this fixture. Players on both sides know each other very well, and it will be a fascinating contest to watch.
H2H Record: Bangladesh have led the head-to-head battle against Zimbabwe with 12 wins in 19 meetings. Zimbabwe, on the other hand, has seven wins and won the last contest between the two sides in August by 10 runs.
Read: T20 World Cup 2022: Bangladesh to face Netherlands on Oct 24
Bangladesh vs India
Match details: November 2 | Venue: Adelaide Oval | Time: 2 p.m. (BST)Beating India will be a hard task for Bangladesh, especially in the ICC events. Though Bangladesh had a famous victory over the Indian side in the 2007 World Cup, that was in the ODI format. India will be well aware that Bangladesh can pose a real threat and will not take the contest lightly. The Tigers will need a bit of luck to overcome India in this fixture.
H2H Record: Bangladesh have only one win over India in the T20 format, which came in a bilateral series in 2019. Overall, India have 10 wins against Bangladesh in 11 meetings.
Bangladesh vs Pakistan
Match details: November 6 | Venue: Adelaide Oval | Time: 10 a.m. (BST)Bangladesh’s final Super 12 Round fixture would be against Pakistan in Adelaide. This fixture could potentially be a do-or-die contest for both the teams. Therefore, this could be a well-contested match to watch. Pakistan will start as favourites, but Bangladesh have a better chance of winning this match than the other two big opponents in the group.
H2H Record: Pakistan have 15 T20I victories in 17 matches against Bangladesh, including the most recent one in New Zealand. On the other hand, the Tigers have only had two triumphs over the Men in Green.
Read: Shakib reclaims his position as No. 1 T20I all-rounder
Bottom Line
Bangladesh have a realistic possibility of winning the matches against the Netherlands and Zimbabwe given the strength of their squads and their better records against them. The Tigers can defeat strong opponents like India, Pakistan, and South Africa, but luck has to be on their side in addition to their best efforts during these matches. The Bangladeshi team could advance to the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2022 if they win at least three games, which is not impossible.
