National Martyrs' Day observed at Algerian Embassy in Dhaka
The Embassy of Algeria in Dhaka observed National Martyrs' Day on Wednesday with a solemn and meaningful programme attended by prominent figures from various sectors, including academics, journalists, business leaders, students and dignitaries.
The event began with the ceremonial hosting of the Algerian national flag, followed by a minute of silence to honor the sacrifices of the martyrs who laid down their lives for Algeria’s freedom.
Following the solemn tribute, special prayers were recited by Mowlana Muhammad Anowarul Haque, offering peace and blessings for the martyrs.
The attendees then watched a captivating film showcasing the significance of Algeria’s National Martyrs’ Day, further highlighting the importance of this commemoration.
When addressing, Ambassador of Algeria to Bangladesh, Abdelouahab SAIDANI, conveyed heartfelt gratitude and respect for the martyrs, reflecting on their invaluable sacrifices.
His speech, delivered with deep reverence, underscored the universal principles of justice, human dignity and the right of people to shape their destiny—values for which the martyrs of Algeria fought tirelessly.
Ambassador SAIDANI emphasized the theme of the day: “Faithful to the Martyrs' Pact,” explaining its profound significance as a reminder to honor the martyrs not only through remembrance but through continued progress and action.
The speech highlighted Algeria’s journey from colonial oppression to independence and the moral compass that the martyrs' sacrifices provide for the nation's sovereignty and dignity.
The Ambassador also spoke on the global recognition of Algeria’s right to self-determination by the United Nations on February 18, 1957 and the historic efforts to preserve the martyrs' legacy.
Drawing attention to the life and sacrifice of martyrs like Larbi Ben M’hidi and Didouche Mourad, he urged all present to preserve their memories through unity, truth, and dedication to the nation’s development.
A special mention was made of Algeria's ongoing commitment to historical truth, including the passage of a law criminalizing the injustices of French colonization. The law serves not only as a tribute to the martyrs but as a foundation for building stronger international relations based on mutual respect and understanding.
Ambassador SAIDANI closed his speech by extending his admiration for the martyrs of Bangladesh, noting the shared values of sacrifice and resilience between the two nations. He emphasized the importance of honoring their memory and legacy through actions that contribute to the continued progress of both Algeria and Bangladesh.

Fakhrul pledges iron grip on mob violence, law & order
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday said efforts will be made to control mobocracy and improve law and order in the country.
“It will be controlled. Efforts will be made to improve the law and order situation. We have passed through a storm, a revolution, a mass uprising. Not everything can be fixed immediately,” he told reporters at the Bangladesh Secretariat on the first working day after the formation of the government.
The main challenge for the government is to build the nation. “Our Prime Minister, who is now leading us, began with the words ‘I have a plan’ for Bangladesh. He has formed the cabinet to implement that plan.”
The cabinet will work to solve the people’s problems and move Bangladesh forward, he added.
Fakhrul emphasised that democracy will remain the guiding principle in all government work. “Democracy is our main ingredient. Particularly in the Local Government Ministry, which directly interacts with the grassroots, I have an advantage because I have worked in local government before.”
He expressed confidence in making the ministry dynamic and capable of addressing people’s issues.

Responding to questions on law and order, the economy, and foreign policy, Fakhrul said the situation is not as bad as perceived. “Law and order has improved compared to before. Macroeconomic stability has returned. Banks are largely under control. With coordinated efforts, we can improve these areas further.”
Responding to another question, Fakhrul said, “We have achieved a major milestone under an interim government through elections. That is a big achievement.”
Asked if the ‘Awami League-free’ election was inclusive, he said, “Both nationally and internationally, it is being recognised as an inclusive election. That is why it is acceptable to all.”
Regarding Awami League’s future role, the minister said the government will announce its political decisions later.
Asked whether a white paper would be published on the interim government’s performance, Fakhrul said it is unnecessary.
“They took responsibility at a special moment and accomplished most of the required work. The main issue was the transition to democracy, which they achieved. Credit must be given for that. They have done a good job,” he said.

Journalists to unite against any attack on media outlets: Matiur Rahman
Editor of the Bangla daily Prothom Alo Matiur Rahman on Wednesday vowed that the country’s newspaper community would stand united against any attack on any media outlet.
“If any newspaper comes under attack, we will collectively resist it,” Matiur said at a programme held in front of the Prothom Alo office at Karwan Bazar, marking the inauguration of an art exhibition titled ‘An Artwork on the Attacked and Burnt Prothom Alo Building’ by artist Mahbubur Rahman.
Recalling past incidents, Matiur Rahman said when newspapers such as ‘Jai Jai Din’ and ‘Amar Desh’ came under attack, the Editors’ Council had issued statements condemning the incidents. “Whatever newspaper faces any attack in the future, we will protest collectively,” he added.
Admitting that the media had made mistakes in the past and may not always be flawless, Matiur Rahman said claiming absolute perfection would be unreasonable. “But we must remain united in the greater interest.”
On December 18, a group of miscreants attacked, vandalised and set fire to the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star in Karwan Bazar area of the capital.
Speaking at the inauguration, Editor of The Daily Star Mahfuz Anam said the arson attack on the country’s two leading newspapers was not an isolated incident but a premeditated one.
Urging the new government to conduct a thorough investigation, he said those directly involved as well as those who instigated and fuelled the violence from behind must be identified and brought before the public.
“This was not just an attack on two media outlets; it was an attempt to set fire to free thinking and independent journalism in the country,” he said.
President of the Newspaper Owners’ Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) AK Azad said no ideology can be destroyed by arson. “Prothom Alo could not be finished by fire. Like a phoenix, it has risen again with renewed vigour.”
Journalists talk about responsibility but many dodge their own: Press Secretary
Representatives of the Editors’ Council, NOAB, media organisations, journalists, business leaders, artists, writers and literary figures attended the event.
The 10-day exhibition began on Wednesday and will continue until February 28. It will remain open to visitors daily from 11am to 1pm and 3pm to 5pm.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru unveils ambitious reform plan on day one
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on his first day in office on Wednesday laid out an ambitious reform agenda centred on institutional recovery, deregulation and broad-based economic participation.
“Government’s ability to deliver depends fundamentally on the strength and efficiency of its institutions,” he said while speaking to reporters after assuming charge at the ministry.
He said that state institutions are currently in a poor condition and require urgent attention. “Our primary problem (right now) is that the state institutions are in a very bad shape. We have to address this first. The institutions must be improved.”
Amir Khosru stressed that restoring professionalism, transparency and efficiency within public institutions would be the first priority.
According to him, without these core elements, even the most ambitious economic programmes would fail to produce meaningful results.
“We have to bring professionalism into the institutions. We have to ensure transparency. We have to ensure efficiency. This is the most important issue,” he said, adding that in the absence of these qualities, no major initiative would work effectively.
The finance minister described institutional reform as the ‘number one’ task before the ministry, underscoring that rebuilding governance structures is a prerequisite for sustainable economic management.
Turning to broader economic policy, he said the country must move away from what he described as a patronage-driven economic model and instead democratise the economy.
“The economy of Bangladesh must be for all people,” Amir Khosru said, emphasising the need for ensuring a level-playing field.
Amir Khosru said every citizen should have an opportunity to participate in economic activity and to benefit from its outcomes, reiterating that wider participation in the economy is essential for inclusive growth. Ensuring that the benefits of economic growth reach every segment of society would be a key benchmark of success under his leadership.
On regulatory reforms, the finance minister renewed his call for serious deregulation and liberalisation, arguing that Bangladesh has become an over-regulated country over time.
Amir Khosru attributed this trend to years of patronage-based politics, which, in his view, resulted in layers of regulations that have increased the cost of doing business and limited fair competition.
“Bangladesh has become over-regulated,” he said.
“To make this successful, we must undertake serious deregulation. We have to liberalise and create a level playing field so that everyone has equal rights to participate in the economy and its benefits reach all.”
Economy suffering from ‘overregulation’, says Amir Khosru
The minister argued that excessive regulation often creates opportunities for corruption and rent-seeking, adding that rationalising the regulatory framework would reduce barriers, improve competitiveness and enhance investor confidence.
When asked to summarise his priorities, he responded succinctly that the economy would remain his central focus, with institutional reform, deregulation and inclusive participation forming the core pillars of his agenda.
