BCL leader put on 4-day remand for firing on students during mass uprising in Feni
Shafiqul Islam Samrat, a local Chhatra league leader, who was seen in a video footage firing on students during the recent student movement in Feni’s Sharshadi union, placed on a four-day remand.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Nusrat Mostari passed the order after investigating officer SI Anwar Hossain produced Samrat before the court seeking a 10-day remand.
Ex-IGP Mamun put on 43-day remand in 8 murder cases
Tipped off, detectives arrested Shafiqul Islam Samrat, general secretary of Sharshadi Union unit Chhatra League, from Chattogram on Wednesday night.
Maram Singh Tripura, the officer-in-charge of Feni Model Police Station, stated that Samrat is a suspect in six murder cases related to the firing and attacks on people during the anti-discrimination student movement.

Ex-MP Mohibur Rahman Manik lands in jail
A Dhaka court on Thursday sent former Member of Parliament from Sunamganj-5 Mohibur Rahman Manik to jail in a case over the attack on a student during the mass uprising.
Judicial Magistrate Alamgir Hossain passed the order after Manik was produced before the court on morning, said officer-in-charge (OC) of Sunamganj Sadar Police Station Nazmul Haque.
Ex-director of Data Center arrested
Defense lawyer Abdul Hamid said the former MP was not present at the scene during the attack on students, yet he was named as an accused.
He also mentioned that Manik is currently very ill, and they have applied for medical treatment and prison privileges.
Besides, his bail hearing is scheduled for October 15.
RAB arrests ex-MP Sohrab Uddin from Dhaka’s Uttara
Earlier, on October 8 night, Manik was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from the Bashundhara residential area in Dhaka.
The arrest was made in connection with a case filed by Hafiz Ali, the brother of a student injured during student student-led movement.

BFIU orders to freeze accounts of Union Bank MD Mokammel
Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has ordered the freezing of all bank accounts held by Union Bank Managing Director ABM Mokammel Haque Chowdhury and his wife, Nazneen Akhtar.
The directive was issued to all banks and financial institutions on Wednesday, following allegations of financial misconduct involving illegal loans.
BFIU seeks bank account info of Tawfiq-e-Elahi, Bahauddin Nasim
Mokammel is accused of granting unauthorized loan facilities to the S Alam Group, benefiting from these illegal transactions.
BFIU has requested all related account information, including Know Your Customer (KYC) details, account opening forms, and updated statements for all accounts held by Mokammel and associated individuals or entities. The BFIU has also asked for transaction vouchers for any amounts exceeding Tk 5 lakh to be submitted within two working days.

Durga Puja: RAB's Cyber Unit monitoring online activities
The Cyber Unit of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) is continuously monitoring online activities to prevent any rumors from disrupting the celebrations of Durga Puja. RAB has expressed its firm stance against the spread of misinformation, emphasizing that they are fully aware and prepared.
These remarks were made by RAB Director General AKM Shahidur Rahman after inspecting security measures at the Durga Puja pavilion in Banani, Dhaka, on Wednesday.
“It is not just the law enforcement agencies that are involved; the 17 crore people of the country are with us. No dishonest groups or criminals will find an opportunity to disrupt our joint efforts,” the RAB DG said.
He informed that RAB’s intelligence operations have been ongoing since October 1 in preparation for the Durga Puja. This year, in addition to the police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Ansar, and Coast Guard, along with armed forces will also ensure safety.
RAB's 15 battalions and the control room at RAB headquarters are actively monitoring various puja pavilions across the country.

RAB arrests ex-MP Sohrab Uddin from Dhaka’s Uttara
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested former Kishoreganj-2 constituency MP Advocate Sohrab Uddin
Sohrab was arrested from Diabari area in Dhaka’s Uttara in connection with charges related to ordering attacks on students and the public during the anti-discrimination student movement, as well as accusations of involvement in financing these violent acts.
ASP Imran Khan of RAB Headquarters (media wing), confirmed the matter on Wednesday.
A total of four cases were filed against Sohrab at the Kishoreganj and Pakundia police stations. In two of these cases, he is listed as the primary accused, while in the other two; he holds the third position on the list of suspects.
Following his arrest, the process of transferring Sohrab to the Detective Branch (DB) office of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is underway, with further investigations expected, added the ASP.

Home Affairs Adviser assures Buddhist Federation of full support for holding events
Home Affairs Adviser, Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, has assured that the Buddhist Federation will receive all necessary assistance to ensure their events are held in a peaceful and joyful environment.
He made this commitment during a discussion today with leaders of the Buddhist Federation at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
No security threat around Durga Puja: Home Adviser
Following the meeting, the adviser spoke to journalists, emphasizing the government’s dedication to providing comprehensive support. “We have assured the leaders of the Buddhist Federation that they will be able to organize their event in a joyous atmosphere. Whatever form of cooperation they need, we will provide,” said the adviser.
Addressing concerns about security, especially in the Hill Tracts, he said that while the issue of the hill districts was not specifically discussed, there is no reason for concern. "Anyone attempting to breach security will face appropriate action," he warned.

In the same discussion, the Home Affairs Adviser also commented on the ongoing Durga Puja celebrations. The Adviser to the Buddhist Federation, Sukumar Barua, acknowledged the cooperation from the Home Ministry, saying that they had sought support to ensure a peaceful and successful event. "There is always some concern about security, and this year is no exception. We have requested assistance to hold our event safely and beautifully," he said.

Ex-MP Mahbub Ara Begum Gini denied bail, sent to jail in Gaibandha
A Gaibandha court sent former MP from Gaibandha-2 constituency Mahbub Ara Begum Gini to jail after rejecting hes bail petition.
Gaibandha’s Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Md Abdul Matin passed the order after hearing a petition for a 10 day remand.

Rejecting the remand and bail prayers, the court sent the former lawmaker to jail in a case filed over the vandalism and arson at the party office of the BNP.

Joy, Palak among 39 sued over leaking NID card information
A case has been filed against 39 people including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and former state minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Zunaid Ahmed Palak on charge of leaking information from National Identity (NID) cards.
Muhammad Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner (DC, media) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), confirmed the matter saying aggrieved Mohammad Enamul Haque filed the case with Kafrul police station naming 19 people including Joy and Palak and 15 to 19 unnamed ones under Cyber Security Act and some sections under Penal Code.

According to the case statement, accused Joy, former ICT adviser to the Hasina, and Palak permitted one Digicon Global Services Ltd to do business with several farms by using the NID information without ensuring national and personal safety.
The NID information was sold to 182 organizations in home and abroad, it reads.
Insecurity has been created among people due to availability of the NID information to a third party, according to the case. The complainant also alleged that the accused embezzled Tk 20, 000 crore.

Renu lynching: Man to die, 4 get life term
A Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced a man to death and four others to life term in jail in a case filed over the death of Taslima Begum Renu in a lynch-mob attack in Uttar Badda of Dhaka around five years back.
Dhaka Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Morshed Alam passed the order in the presence of the accused.
The condemned convict is Ibrahim alias Hridoy Molla and the lifers included Riya Begum Moyna, Abul Kalam Azad and Kamal Hossain.
Jubo League leader arrested over murder case in Dhaka
Earlier, the court set September 30 to deliver the judgment but later the date was deferred to October 9 as the verdict wasn’t prepared.
According to the case statement, victim Renu died in a lynch-mob attack when she went to a school to get information about admission of her son in Uttar Badda on July 20, 2019.
Victim’s relative Syed Nasir Uddin Titu filed a case accusing 500 unidentified people.
Man stabbed to death over land dispute in Gaibandha
On September 10, 2021, the investigating officer of the case Abdul Haque, also a Detective Branch inspector, submitted a chargesheet against 13 people including two under-aged children.
On April 1 of the same year, the court framed charges against the 13 accused in the case.
After completing the legal procedures, the court handed down the judgment while the two children are now under trial.

23 new HC additional judges take oath
Twenty-three new additional judges of the High Court (HC) took oath on Wednesday morning for two years.
Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed administrated the swearing-in programme at the Judges’ Lounge of the Supreme Court (SC).
SC Registrar General Aziz Ahmed conducted the function where justices of the both Appellate and HC divisions were present.
Earlier, on Tuesday night, the government appointed the new additional judges for the HC division for two years.

A gazette notification signed on by Md Golam Rabbani, secretary to the Law and Justice Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, was issued in this regard on Tuesday night.
The President appointed them exercising jurisdiction following section-98 of the Constitution and the tenure of the judges will begin from the day of taking oath, it reads.
The newly appointed judges are - Md Golam Martuza Mazumder, Syed Enayet Hossain, Md Monsur Alam, Syed Jahed Mansur, KM Rasheduzzaman Raja, Md Zabid Hossain, Mubina Asaf, Qazi Waliul Islam, Ainun Nahar Siddiqua, Md Abdul Mannan, Tamanna Rahman, Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud, Md Hamidur Rahman, Nasrin Akter, Sathika Hossain, Syed Mohammad Tajrul Hossain, Md Toufik Inam, Eusuf Abdullah Sumon, Sheikh Tahsin Ali, Foyej Ahmed, Md Sogir Hossain, Shikder Mahmudur Razee and Debashish Roy Chowdhury.

The appointment of the judges will be effective from the day of swearing-in on Wednesday.
