The death toll from Covid-19 rose to 7,129 in Bangladesh on Tuesday as health authorities reported 40 more deaths in 24 hours.

Besides, 1877  new Covid-19 cases were recorded during the period, pushing the country’s total tally to 494,209.

The mortality rate is now 1.44 percent, said the Directorate General of Health Services.

So far, 426,729  patients – 86.35 percent -- including 2,884  new ones in the last 24 have recovered.

Bangladesh reported its first cases on March 8. The infection number reached the 300,000-mark on August 26. The first death was reported on March 18 and the death toll exceeded 7000 on December 12.

Until now, 3,005,512  tests have been carried out, including 19,054 new ones, and 16.44 percent of the patients turned out to be positive.

Bangladesh is seeing 2901.88 infections, 2505.65 recoveries, and 41.86  deaths per million.

Global situation

More than 72.8 million people have been infected with coronavirus globally and over 1.62 million of them died since the first cases were reported in December last year, according to data compiled by the Johns Hopkins University (JHU).

The global caseload stood at 72,824,936 with 1,621,150 fatalities on Tuesday.

In the United States, the total number of Covid-19 cases topped 16 million according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at JHU.

US case count rose to 16,517,256, with 300,477 deaths as of Tuesday morning.

India's Covid-19 tally reached 9,906,165 on Tuesday as 27,071 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours till Monday, the latest data from the federal health ministry showed.

According to the data, the death toll mounted to 143,709 as 336 COVID-19 patients died since Monday morning.

Besides, Brazil reported 6,927,145 cases with 181,835 fatalities.

Brazil on Monday reported 433 deaths from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) disease in the last 24 hours.

According to the Ministry of Health, in the same period, tests detected 25,193 new cases of infection, bringing the total caseload to 6,927,145 since Latin America's first case was detected Feb. 26 in Sao Paulo, capital of Brazil's southeast Sao Paulo state.

Sao Paulo state, home to some 46 million inhabitants, has registered 44,050 COVID-19 deaths and 1,337,016 cases.

Several Brazilian states, including Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Parana, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, suspended the lifting of lockdown restrictions due to a rise in hospitalizations in December compared to November.

Brazil has the world's second-highest COVID-19 death toll, after the United State.

Infections have been reported in more than 191 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
