Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Iqbal Mahmood on Sunday said promotion of government officials from ninth grade onwards should happen through examination to ensure accountability and transparency for government officials.
He made the recommendation while presenting the commission's annual report for 2019 to President Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban in the evening.
He also recommended the establishment of a Civil Service Reforms Commission.
During the meeting, the ACC chairman briefed the President on various aspects of the report and the overall activities of the commission.
The ACC chairman said more than 21,000 complaints were received in 2019. Of which 6% has been taken for investigation and 18% has been sent to the concerned ministry for necessary action.
He further said that in 2019, more than Tk 349600 crores were collected as fines, and property worth Tk 438 crore confiscated. Besides, various properties were seized and blocked at home and abroad.
Mentioning Corruption as a major obstacle to development, President Mohammad Abdul Hamid said that social awareness should be created to prevent informal corruption besides institutional corruption.
The President called upon the government as well as people's representatives and volunteers from various social and cultural organizations to come forward to prevent corruption from the society.
He also urged all to build resistance against corruption across the country, so that future generations can grow up in a corruption-free environment.
Expressing satisfaction over the activities of the Anti-Corruption Commission, the President hoped that the Commission would be more active in curbing corruption in the future.
The ACC Chairman also sought the full cooperation of the President in taking necessary steps for the implementation and monitoring of the recommendations made by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
Secretary to the President Sampad Barua, Military Secretary Major General SM Salah Uddin Islam, Press Secretary Joynal Abedin and Secretary attached to the President's Office Wahidul Islam Khan were present on the occasion.
ACC Commissioners- Mozammel Haque Khan and AFM Aminul Islam were also present on the occasion.
