Bangladesh reported eight new Covid-19 deaths until early Saturday, including five in Dhaka, taking the national tally to 8,190.

The mortality rate stood at 1.52%, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in a handout.

Bangladesh had a daily infection rate of 2.51% with 305 new cases in the last 24 hours, pushing the caseload to 537,770.

On January 1, the daily infection rate was 8.18%.

So far, 3,736,608 tests, including 12,135 new ones, have been carried out since the first cases were reported on March 8.

The overall infection rate stood at 14.39%. However, 482,841 patients – 89.79% – have recovered so far, the DGHS said.

Covid-19 global scenario 

The global Covid-19 cases surpassed 105 million on early Saturday.

The total caseload reached 105,461,681 while 2,300,891 deaths have been recorded, according to Johns Hopkins University tally.

Among the countries, the US remained the worst-hit with 26,814,024 cases and 459,571 deaths.

Brazil’s caseload rose to 9,447,165 and the death toll to 230,034 while India recorded 10,814,304 Covid-19 cases and 154,918 deaths.

Coronavirus Vaccination in Bangladesh

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina launched a Covid-19 vaccination drive at Kurmitola General Hospital in the capital on January 27.

Health Minister Zahid Maleque said seven million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine are now available in the country. He dubbed the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine as the safest in the world.

For getting the jab, one needs to get registered at www.surokkha.gov.bd

For now, the vaccination program will be limited to five centers in the capital, and the nationwide inoculation will start in early February.
