Commerce minister Tipu Munshi unveiled the initiative at a virtual meeting chaired by BGMEAPresident Dr Rubana Huq. With seven pledges that dramatically improve educational, economic, social, and mental health, this is a movement for a sustainable future, according to BGMEA.

Thanking the association for the ambitious initiative, Minister Munshi said, “The pledges are actually well sustainable. These were necessary as the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country’s economy. The current team of BGMEA thinks they are excellent. We hope other sectors will be encouraged by the BGMEA’s pledges."

Replying to a poser, Munshi said that the government is open to announcing fresh stimulus packages for the readymade garment industry. “We have received a letter from BGMEA in this regard. It has been sent to the Finance Ministry as well. We are open to providing new stimulus packages. We overcame the first wave of the pandemic somewhat well. Now, we have to overcome the second wave as well.”

The Minister also said the country’s workforce should be utilised in the global market for the fourth industrial revolution. “We want to move forward and overcome all barriers."
On her part, the BGMEA president said they had also taken various initiatives to showcase the industry in the global market in a new way. “We took seven pledges, including special higher education for workers, providing mental and physical healthcare, sustainability, protecting cultural and heritage, building skill manpower and capacity."
