The deceased was identified as Cherag Ali, 65, son of Arif Ullah of the village.
Akhter Hossain, officer-in-charge of Moglabazar Police Station, said the clash broke out when Lutfur Rahman and Amin Ullah – two residents of the village- engaged in a brawl over land around 10am.
At one stage, their cohorts carried out an attack on oppositions with local weapons.
The two-hour-long melee ended when police appeared and fired rubber bullets.
Cherag Ali and 30 others received serious injuries during the scuffle. When they were taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hosptial, doctors pronounced Cherag dead.
“We took the situation under control firing six rounds of rubber bullet. Eleven villagers were detained from the spot,” he added.
