Brace for showers in 24 hours!
The weather department has predicted showers across Bangladesh in the next 24 hours, with cyclone ‘Asani’ weakening into a depression.
“Light to moderate rain or thunder showers with lightning flashes and temporary gusty or squally winds is likely to occur at many places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy falls at places over the country,” the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said on Thursday.

Day and night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged over the country, the department said in its weather bulletin.
The maximum rainfall was recorded in Sylhet at 78 mm in the past 24 hours, as per the bulletin.
Meanwhile, ‘Asani’ over the west-central Bay off Andhra coast moved westwards and weakened into a deep depression first and then into a depression.

It was centred over the coastal region of Andhra Pradesh and adjoining areas at 6am, the bulletin said.
The trough of westerly low lies over West Bengal and adjoining areas, it added.

Heavy rainfall likely in 5 divisions
Moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in five divisions of the country Thursday, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
Due to the peripheral effect of the cyclonic storm Asani, moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at places over Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, Dhaka and Sylhet divisions.
The severe cyclonic storm Asani over West Central Bay of Bengal and adjoining area moved northwestwards, weakened into a cyclonic storm, and now lies over the Andhra coast and adjoining West Central Bay.
It is likely to move in a north or northeasterly direction and weaken gradually into a deep depression during the next 12 hours, the BMD said in the evening.
The day and night temperatures may remain unchanged over the country, it added.

Drizzle brings cheer to Faridpur & Patuakhali as Asani weakens
Residents of Faridpur and Patuakhali woke up to a wet spell on Wednesday morning, as Asani weakened into a cyclonic storm and triggered intermittent overnight drizzle.
The first drops of rain in the two districts came with a cool breeze, bringing the much-needed reprieve to the residents from the sizzling summer heat.
Surujul Amin, in-charge of the Faridpur weather office, said the partly cloudy sky in the morning and the drizzle were due to Asani weakening into a cyclonic storm.
The local Met office has recorded 51.2mm of rainfall activities in the past 24 hours till Wednesday morning, he said. “It will continue for two more days.”

In Faridpur district town, many people preferred to stay indoors due to the drizzle and enjoy the pleasant weather. Traffic was less on the roads, as a result.
Deputy director of Faridpur department of agriculture extension (DAE), said, "If the light showers continue for two more days, then the litchi growers and onion farmers may face massive crop damage."
UNB Patuakhali correspondent reports: Rahat Hossain, a meteorologist with the Patuakhali weather office, said, “Light to moderate showers are likely to continue for two more days in the district.”
Besides, the residents of coastal areas of the district are likely to witness a tidal wave after two days of rainfall activities. However it will depend on the effect of ‘Asani’.
Meanwhile, the movement of small ferries on 18 internal routes of Patuakhali has been suspended due to the inclement weather.
Asani, the severe cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal, moved west-northwestwards in the west central Bay and adjoining areas this morning and weakened into a cyclonic storm.

It was centred over the west-central Bay off Andhra coast, about 1,335 kms southwest of Chattogram port, 1,310 kms southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 1,150 kms southwest of Mongla port and 1,180 kms southwest of Payra port around 6am, the Met office said.
It is likely to move in a northwesterly or northerly direction and weaken gradually into a deep depression in the next 24 hours, according to the Met office special bulletin.
Maximum sustained wind speed within 54 kms of the cyclone centre is about 62 kmph rising to 88 kmph in gusts or squalls. Sea will remain very rough near the cyclone zone.
Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to hoist distant warning signal number 2 to warn ships living the ports of a depression at the sea.
All fishing boats and trawlers over the north Bay and in the deep sea have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution. They have also been advised not to venture into the deep sea.

Severe Cyclonic storm ‘Asani’ over west central bay and adjoining area moved west-northwestwards over the same area and is likely to move in a northwesterly direction and weaken into a cyclonic storm during next 12 hours commencing 12 pm on Tuesday.

It was centered at noon about 1205 kms southwest of Chattogram port, 1170 kms Southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 1055 kms southwest of Mongla port and 1065 kms southwest of Payra port.
Maximum sustained wind speed within 64 kms of the severe cyclone centre is about 89 kph rising to 117 kph in gusts or squalls.
Sea will remain high near the severe cyclone centre.

Heavy rainfall warning for Khulna, Ctg & Barishal
The current spell of pleasant weather in Bangladesh is likely to continue, as the weatherman has predicted heavy showers in three divisions in the next 24 hours.
In fact, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) on Tuesday issued the heavy rainfall warning for three divisions as severe cyclonic storm ‘Asani’ over the west central Bay and adjoining areas moved west-northwestwards.

“Moderately heavy (23-43mm) to very heavy (88mm or more) rainfall is likely to occur at places over Khulna, Chattogram and Barishal divisions during the next 24 hours," the BMD said in its weather bulletin.

Cyclone Asani: Five coastal districts on alert
All necessary preparations have been taken in five coastal districts to face any possible situation that might arise due to cyclonic storm ‘Asani’.
Barishal divisional administration has kept 4,915 shelter centres ready even though the Bangladesh Meteorological Department predicted that the cyclone is unlikely to hit the country's coastline.
Of these, 1,071 shelters have been prepared in Barishal district, 925 in Patuakhali, 1104 in Bhola, 712 in Pirojpur, 629 in Barguna and 474 in Jhalakathi.
Two million people along with their livestock can take shelter at these centers.
Besides, the Divisional Commissioner's Office has instructed the concerned officials to provide clean water, dry food and electricity in the shelters.
CPP (Cyclone Preparedness Programme) volunteers have also been prepared, said a source at district administration.
The Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) and various government and non-government organizations have already been instructed to remain alert.
Amin-ul-Ahsan, Barishal Divisional Commissioner, said adequate preparations have been taken to face the possible cyclone.
UNB Patuakhali correspondent reports: The coastal areas of Patuakhali district have been experiencing rainfall since Sunday morning, due to the impact of severe Cyclonic storm ‘Asani’ that is brewing over the Bay.
The local Met office recorded 41.6 mm of rainfall activities around 6 pm on Monday.
The local Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office asked the farmers to harvest their paddy as soon as possible to mitigate damage.

Rahat Hossain, an observer of Patuakhali Weather Office, said “Light to moderate rains are likely to continue for two more days in the district. The southern part of the country including Patuakhali is likely to be safe but it will likely make landfall in Odisha in India."
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Kamal Hossain, said “We will sit in a meeting after getting No 4 signal but we still are observing the situation.”

UNB Bhola correspondent reports, the local administration has kept 691 shelters ready to tackle the cyclone ‘Asani’.
The local Met Office recorded 4.5 mm of rainfall from Monday morning until Monday noon.
The authorities concerned have alerted the fishermen and residents of the coastal areas through loudspeakers. Meanwhile a sense of panic has been prevailing in the area.
Deputy Commissioner of Bhola district said all out preparation has been taken and 13,600 volunteers of Red Crescent are ready to face any situation.
Around noon on Monday, it was centered about 1105 Kms Southwest of Chattogram port, 1045 kms Southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 1015 kms South-Southwest of Mongla port and 1000 kms South-Southwest of Payra port, said a Met Office bulletin.
It is likely to move in a northwesterly direction, it said.
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman on Sunday said there is no possibility of Cyclone Asani hitting Bangladesh coast.
He said the cyclone is moving northwestwards and it will weaken while passing Odisha, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar and West Bengal in India on May 12 and will turn into a low, he told reporters at his Secretariat office.
The cyclone might cause storms and rains in Bangladesh but there will be no tidal surge, he added.

Showers with intense lightning flashes and temporary gusty wind is likely to occur across the country in the next 24 hours as the Cyclonic Storm “Asani” over Southeast Bay and adjoining South Andaman Sea moves Northwestwards.
According to Met Office, “Showers are likely to occur at many places over Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions and at a few places over Mymensingh & Sylhet divisions along with one or two places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, & Dhaka divisions.”
Meanwhile a mild Heat Wave is sweeping over Sylhet division and the districts of Madaripur, Rangamati, Cumilla, M. Court, Feni, Khulna and Jashore and it may abate from some places, said Bangladesh Meteorological Department in a bulletin.

It said day temperature may fall slightly and night temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country.
In an extended outlook for the next three days BMD said “Thundershowers activity may increase”.
The cyclone was centered at noon on Sunday about 1205 Kms South-Southwest of Chattogram port, 1125 kms South-Southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 1185 kms South of Mongla port and 1145 kms South of Payra port, said a Met office bulletin .
It is likely to intensify further and move in a Northwesterly direction, it said.

Tropical storm Asani crosses Myanmar's delta region
Tropical storm Asani has crossed Myanmar's delta region starting from Haiggyikyun, an island located at the mouth of the Pathein River, on Tuesday, according to the country's state weather department.
"Some 4,600 people in the region were already evacuated," U Win Shwe, deputy director-general of the disaster management department under the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, told Xinhua.

The tropical deep depression would continue to move along the delta coasts near Pathein towards south Rakhine coasts in the next 24 hours, said the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.
The department forecast heavy rainfalls, maximum sustained winds of 45 mph and wave heights of about 9-13 feet in the next 24 hours due to the crossing of the tropical storm.
