Kishoreganj: 3 to die for killing housewife for dowry
A Kishoreganj court Thursday sentenced three people to death for killing a woman for dowry.
Judge Mohammad Habibullah of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal of the district gave the order.
The death row convicts are the woman's husband Khokon Mia, 37, his sister Jarina Khatun, 39, and cousin Jalal Mia, 43.
The court also fined Khokon, Jarina and Jalil Tk50,000, Tk20,000 and Tk30,000, respectively.
Special Public Prosecutor MA Afzal argued for the state during the hearing. Advocate Ataur Rahman Akanda and Shyamal Kumar Sarkar represented the defendants.

On October 4, 2015, Hena Akter was strangled to death by the convicts for not fulfilling their demand for dowry, according to the case complaint.
The case was filed at Karimganj Police Station upon receiving a complaint from Hena's brother Saiful Islam.
Following investigation, police framed charges against six people but the court cleared the other three accused of the charges.

Chattogram brother, sister get life imprisonment for acid attacks on cousins
A Chattogram court Wednesday sentenced a woman and her brother to life imprisonment for attacking their two cousins with acid in 2010.
Convicts Sharmin Farzana Latif Saki, 33, and her brother Muhammad Iftekhar Latif, 30, were also fined Tk30,000 and Tk50,000.
In case of non-payment, they will receive an additional prison sentence of one year.
Chattogram Fifth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Nargis Akhter passed the order.
Iftekhar and Sharmin were taken to jail after the judgment was delivered, Advocate Taslim Uddin, an additional prosecutor at the court, told UNB.
They threw acid on their cousins Muntaha Karina, 31, and Salsabil Tasnim, 27, at their residence in Chawkbazar's Joynagar area in Chattogram city.
Muntaha and Salsabil's father Anwarul Mubin filed a case over the incident.
On December 14, 2010, the police filed a charge sheet against Iftekhar and Sharmin.

Man gets life term for killing wife in Khulna
A Khulna court has sentenced a man to rigorous life imprisonment for killing his wife.
At the same time, the court also fined the accused Md A Gafur Mali Tk 20,000 with additional six months rigorous imprisonment for non-payment .
Khulna Additional District and Sessions Judge Ashraf Uddin passed the order on Monday.

Md A Gafur Mali is a resident of Betagram in Khulna’s Dumuria upazila.
According to court sources, Monira Begum Mita, Gafur Mali’s wife came to know about his second marriage. And on the night of September 26, 2010 Gafur suffocated her to death in a planned manner.
Next day victim's father filed a murder case at Dumuria police station.

On January 5, 2011, Dumuria Police SI Shahjahan submitted a charge sheet to the court accusing Gafur.

Khulna man sentenced in absentia to life for raping, killing minor
A court in Khulna on Friday sentenced a man in absentia to life in jail for raping a minor domestic help on the pretext of marriage and killing her in 2010.
Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 Judge Mahmuda Khatun handed down the punishment to Sheikh Khurshid Alam alias Rubel after holding him guilty of the crimes. The judge also imposed a fine of Tk 80,000 on the convict.
According to the prosecution, the minor girl started working as a domestic help in the house of Abdul Kuddus in the Arambagh area of Sonadanga upazila.

Abdul’s son Rubel established sexual intimacy with the minor promising to marry her later. When the girl got pregnant, Rubel made her abort the baby with help of his sister-in-law, the court was told.
Following the abortion, the girl started putting pressure on Rubel to marry her. To get rid of her, Rubel set her on fire on June 16, 2010, following an argument and then left the house.
Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed her to Khulna Medical College and Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries during treatment.
However, the girl managed to give a dying declaration that was used by the police to implicate Rubel in the case, Tipu Lal Dash, sub-inspector at Sonadanga police station, told UNB.

On October 4, 2010, the police submitted a chargesheet in the court against four people in the case, including Rubel.
The court, however, acquitted the other three accused in the case for lack of evidence.
