Independence Cup Football : Sheikh Jamal reach quarter-final crushing Brothers Union
Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club reached the quarterfinal of the season's curtain raiser meet, the 13-team Independence Cup Football 2023 from Group A crushing old horse Brothers Union Club by 4-0 goals in their first appearance on Monday.
Brazilian midfielder Higor struck twice for the former BPL champions Sheikh Jamal DC in the 11th and 36th minutes to dominate the first half by 2-0 goals at the Bashundhara Kings Arena in the capital on Monday afternoon.

Colombian forward Bladimir and local striker Sazzad netted two more goals for Sheikh Jamal DC in the 59th and 73rd minutes, respectively.
Sheikh Jamal DC will play the Group A deciding match on Thursday (November 2) against Bangladesh Police FC, which also assured the quarterfinal berth from the group after beating Brothers Union Club by 2-0 goals last Friday.

In the day's another match, last time runners-up Sheikh Russel KC maintained their unbeaten run in Group B, beating Bangladesh Air Force by a 1-0 goal at the Bir Shreshtha Fl Lt Shaheed Matiur Rahman Stadium in Munshiganj on Monday afternoon.
After a barren first half, local forward Dipok Roy scored the match-winning goal for Sheikh Russel KC in the 61st minute (1-0).
13-team Independence Cup Football begins Friday: 3 matches on Day 1
Sheikh Russel KC, which played a goalless draw with Rahmatganj MFS in their first appearance, will play former champions Dhaka Abahani Limited in their last group match, also on Thursday (November 2).
Earlier, Dhaka Abahani Limited made a good start in the ongoing final round of the Independence Cup Football 2023, also beating the Bangladesh Air Force team by 2-0 goals last Friday.

Munim continues to shine for Abahani
Promising young batsman Munim Shahriar continues to shine for Abahani Limited. After hitting an unbeaten 92 in the last game, he hit 74 off 40 on Monday to guide Abahani to a 49-run win under the DL Method over Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
With this win, Abahani became the number two team in the points table of the Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier Division Twenty20 Cricket League after Prime Bank Cricket Club. Abahani now have won seven games in nine rounds of the league.
Abahani won the toss and opted to bat first, and they posted a huge total of 183 runs riding on the Munim and Najmul Hossain Shanto. Munim ended up on 74 off 40 with nine fours and three sixes while Najmul remained unbeaten for 65 off 42 with six fours and two sixes. Along the way, Munim completed his fifty off 24 balls, which is now the fastest fifty of Dhaka League so far.
For Sheikh Jamal, Ebadot Hossain, Salauddin Shakil, Nasir Hossain and Ziaur Rahman took one wicket each.

After the rain hit the game, Sheikh Jamal needed to score 148 in 13 overs as per the DL Method, but they tumbled for 98 for eight in 13 overs and lost the game by 49 runs under the DL Method.
In the other games on Monday afternoon, Gazi Group Cricketers beat Partex Sporting Club by nine wickets under the DL Method while the match between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Brothers Union ended up in no-result due to the rain.

Partex batted first after losing the toss and posted 109 for seven in 20 overs. This match was hit by the rain as well, and the target of Gazi was reduced to 47 runs in eight overs as per the DL Method. Gazi chased down this target with nine wickets in hand.

Sheikh Jamal end Mohammedan’s winning run
Coming into the fourth round of the ongoing Banglabandhu Dhaka Premier Division Twenty20 Cricket League, Mohammedan Sporting Club suffered their first defeat at the hands of Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club on Monday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
It was Nurul Hasan Sohan, the wicketkeeper-batsman, whose previous highest score this season was just 22, who came up with a whirlwind 66 off 34 deliveries with four fours and five sixes and helped his team to post a challenging total of 161 runs for five in 20 overs.

Mohammedan failed to chase down the target of 162 despite a 43-ball 57 by Nadif Chowdhury. Ebadat Hossain and Enamul Haque bagged three early wickets to destroy their top-order, and Mohammedan failed to recover from that early damage.
Sheikh Jamal won the toss and batted in an unexpected way to score only 85 runs for five in 15 0vers. But in the last five overs, they added 76 runs without losing any more wickets, thanks to some big hittings from Nurul and Ziaur Rahman who ended up on 35 off 17 balls with one four and three sixes.
Shakib Al Hasan and Abu Hider took two wickets each. Abu Hider conceded 53 runs in four overs.

In reply, Mohammedan slumped to 15/4, and at the very early stage of the game, they lost the race. Pavez Hossain Emon, who hit a fifty in the previous game, suffered a duck this time around. Along with him, Irfan Sukkur, who also had hit a fifty in the second game of the season, suffered second consecutive duck, and in between them, Shakib only posted two runs.
Mohammedan’s last ray of hope was the bats of Shamsur Rahman and Nadif Chowdhey, who came up with a 48-run stand in the fifth wicket partnership. But they eventually ended up on 145 for eight in 20 overs and lost the game by 16 runs.
For Sheikh Jamal, Enamul bagged three wickets while Ziaur took two.
In the other two games of the day, Gazi Group Cricketers beat Legends of Rupganj by seven wickets and Prime Bank Cricket Club beat Partex Sporting Club by 72 runs at BKSP.
Soumya Sarkar hit 53 off 43 balls with four fours and two sixes for Gazi while Mohammad Mithun was the best batsman for Prime Bank scoring 57 off 36 deliveries with three fours and as many as sixes. For Prime Bank, Rubel Hossain bagged four wickets conceding 30 runs in four overs. It was his first game in the season.
