T20 World Cup 2022: Semifinal qualification scenarios
As the Super 12s is about to finish on November 6, the big teams started to find their form in the final stages of this round in their quest for a semifinal berth. It seems three teams are currently fighting for a place in the semifinals from Group 1, while the scenarios in Group 2 are a bit complicated. Let’s take a look at the semifinal qualification scenarios for the T20 World Cup 2022.
Semifinal qualification scenarios for the T20 World Cup 2022
As it stands in the points tables of both groups, the semi-final lineup will likely be from the teams that started their campaign as favorites in the Twenty20 World Cup 2022. Australia, New Zealand, and England are the favorites from Group 1 to advance to the knockout phase. On the other hand, India and South Africa are in a strong position in Group 2. Here are the current scenarios for both groups' points tables.

Group 1
New Zealand are in a strong position in the points standings to finish top of Group 1. They have five points with better run rates than England and Australia. The Kiwi side will face Ireland in their final group stage fixture and will advance to the next round if they simply beat them.
England and Australia will likely battle it out for the second spot in this group. Both have 5 points each, but England ahead of Australia thanks to better run rates. England will take on Sri Lanka in their final group phase fixtures, while Australia will face Afghanistan.
In a realistic point of view, Sri Lanka have a better chance to beat England than Afghanistan have to overcome Australia. The reigning champions, Australia, will be hoping for Sri Lanka to defeat England in their final fixture so that they can advance to the next phase by beating Afghanistan.
On the other hand, England will qualify for the next phase if they beat Sri Lanka. The Lankan side is in fourth place with 4 points, and they have a chance if they beat England. But at the same time, Australia have to lose their fixture against Afghanistan in order for Sri Lanka to advance to the next phase.
Besides, Ireland and Afghanistan have no chance to move on to the semifinals as they are in the fifth and sixth positions, respectively, with 3 and 2 points each.

Group 2
India are currently at the top of the points table with 6 points after four games, and they will advance to the semifinal phase should they win against Zimbabwe in their final fixture of the Super 12 Round.
South Africa are in the second position with 5 points and will have two matches left against Pakistan and the Netherlands, respectively. The Proteas side is the hot favourite to finish in the top two in the standings as they have a strong run rate.
Bangladesh are in third position with 4 points and can have 6 points if they beat Pakistan in their final fixture on November 6. On the other hand, Pakistan can earn as many as 6 points if they win their final two fixtures against South Africa and Bangladesh, respectively.
Both Bangladesh and Pakistan have an outside chance to finish in the top two of the points table, but that completely depends on the outcomes of India and South Africa’s fixtures. Besides, Zimbabwe and the Netherlands are currently in the fourth and sixth positions, respectively. These two teams have no chance of making it to the knockout stage.

Bottom Line
Australia, England, New Zealand, India, and South Africa are expected to advance to the next round based on the current point standings scenarios for a semifinal spot from both groups. T20 World Cup 2022: Australia, England, New Zealand - who are favourites to move to semifinals?
Three hot favourites in Group 1 of the Super 12s are vying for a spot in the knockout phase of the T20 World Cup 2022. Sri Lanka are still in the race for a semifinal berth, but their chances are very slim. On the other hand, Ireland and Afghanistan are already out of the tournament. Let’s have a look at which teams among Australia, England, and New Zealand are favourites to advance to the semifinals.
Twenty20 World Cup 2022: Scenarios of Group 1
The majority of experts predicted that Australia would dominate the Group 1 stage given that they are the defending champions and the tournament's hosts. However, Australia's chances of making it to the semifinals are in jeopardy after falling to New Zealand by a huge margin of 89 runs in the Super 12 Round opener.

The Australian team was hard hit by net run rates, and they are still far behind their group rivals in this equation. However, the 2021 champions have stayed strong in the race for a place in the semifinals by sitting in third place in the points standings.
New Zealand are currently top of the group 1 points table with 5, but they have a way better run rate than second-placed England and their arch-rival Australia; both of them have 5 points as well.
Sri Lanka are in the fourth position with 4 points, and they are also in the race for a spot in the semifinals. However, the Lankan side’s chances rely on the outcomes of the other remaining fixtures in the group even if they overcome England in their final game of the Super 12s.
Among the other teams, Afghanistan are completely out of the tournament, while Ireland are mathematically in the race for a berth in the knockout phase. However, the Irish team’s probability of going to the next round depends on a lot of ifs and buts, which are unlikely to happen.
Let’s take a glance at the current situation of the Group 1 points table, the remaining fixtures, and which teams have a better chance to go to the semifinals.

Australia
The Australian side will face Afghanistan in their final Group 1 fixture this Friday at the Adelaide Oval. Winning the match will not be enough for Australia if New Zealand and England win their respective final matches. Australia will have to ensure a big margin of victory in this contest so that their net run rates improve. But as it seems now, Australia need a favour from Ireland and Sri Lanka by winning their respective matches against New Zealand and England.
England
The English side will face a tougher opponent than Australia and New Zealand in their final Group 1 fixture. They will take on the Lanakan side on November 5 at the SCG. England will likely advance to the knockout round if they overcome Sri Lanka in this contest, as they have better run rates than Australia.
New Zealand
The Kiwi side is the favourite to top the Group 1 point standings thanks to a superior run rate. The 2021 ICC Twenty20 World Cup Champions will advance to the semifinals if they simply beat Ireland. It will be challenging for the Irish team to come away with a victory given the New Zealand team's performance thus far in the competition.

Verdict
According to the point standings and net run rates, New Zealand are the clear favorite to top Group 1 and advance to the knockout round. The English team should be more confident than Australia in order to secure a spot in the last four since they have greater run rates. The Australian team will thus be under massive pressure to defeat Afghanistan in Adelaide and advance to the T20 World Cup 2022 semifinals.

However, the Dutch side experienced their first defeat in the tournament when they lost to Sri Lanka by 16 runs in their third game.

The match against Sri Lanka on Thursday was the Netherlands side’s do-or-die contest to secure a place in the Super 12 phase if Namibia fails to win against the UAE. However, Namibia couldn’t maintain their good performances in the opening match in the next two encounters and were knocked out of the competition. After overcoming the Dutch side in their third match, Sri Lanka finished first in their group and moved to Group 1 of the Super 12 Round. The Netherlands finished second in the group, while Namibia missed out on qualification after finishing third in the group.
Among the players, Maxwell Patrick O'Dowd has been the most in-form Dutch batter in the competition. He has 129 runs in 3 innings with a strike rate of 121.69. Top-order batter Bas de Leede (58) and opener Vikramjit Singh (56) are also having a good time with the bat, but they should work on their strike rate.

BFW de Leede has been the best among them, picking up 7 wickets in 3 innings with an economy rate of 7.55. Besides, FJ Klaassen (3) and PA van Meekeren (3) have also done well with the ball.

T20 World Cup 2022: Group phase scenarios for Sri Lanka, West Indies
The first round of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 has heated up after West Indies and Sri Lanka’s losses to Scotland and Namibia in their respective groups' opening fixtures. The former two World Cup winners are now in danger of being eliminated from the first round. Let’s have a look at the West Indies and Sri Lanka’s current group phase scenarios.
2022 ICC Twenty20 World Cup: Group A’s present scenario
Namibia's victory over Sri Lanka in the tournament's opening match on October 16 came as a surprise. But their victory over the Lankan side has made the group A’s point standings wide open. Sri Lanka came back strong against the UAE after losing their first match by 55 runs. They beat the United Arab Emirates by 79 runs and moved up to the third spot in the point standings.
Read: T20 World Cup 2022: Key stats for Bangladesh match venues
On the other hand, Namibia failed to maintain the momentum after their historic triumph over Sri Lanka. They were defeated by the Netherlands by 5 wickets and dropped to second place.
The Netherlands are currently the unbeaten side in this group after two consecutive victories over the UAE and Namibia, respectively. They have taken the top spot with 4 points, but their run rate is the major concern at the moment. Despite winning two matches, the Dutch side is still behind in net run rate compared to Namibia and Sri Lanka. They have to beat the Lankan team in their final group stage fixtures on Thursday in order to qualify for the Super 12s. Otherwise, they have to rely on the match between Namibia and the UAE, where the latter is already out of the competition.
Both Namibia and Sri Lanka will move to the next round if they win their respective final fixtures in the group. However, who will top the group depends on the run rates. Given the current scenario, Namibia will likely top the group if they beat the UAE and advance to the Group 1 Super 12 Round.
Sri Lanka, on the other hand, are most likely to finish second in the final point table of this group if they overcome the Netherlands on Thursday. The Lankan side will join Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, and South Africa in Group 2 of the Super 12s if they finish second in the standings.

ICC Twenty20 World Cup 2022: Group B’s current scenario
Like Sri Lanka, the two-time Twenty20 World Cup champions, West Indies, suffered a huge defeat against Scotland by 42 runs in their tournament opener on October 17. The Caribbean side made a comeback in their second match, beating Zimbabwe by 31 runs on Wednesday. The West Indies moved up to the third position in Group B's point standings.
The Scottish side remained in the top spot despite losing to Ireland by 6 wickets in Hobart thanks to better run rates. Zimbabwe remained in second position, while the Ireland team is in fourth place at the moment.
Group B is wide open and any team can finish top in the points standings depending on the final match day’s outings. On Friday, West India will meet Ireland, while Scotland will face Zimbabwe. The winners of these two fixtures will advance to the Super 12 Round.
Depending on the current run rate, the West Indies are in a difficult position. They have to beat the Irish side by a big margin in order to finish top of the group. The Caribbean side will advance to Group 2 of the Super 12 Round if they finish at the top of the points table.
