Govt scraps black money whitening facility
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has scrapped the opportunity to whiten black money by paying 15 percent tax.
The NBR on Monday issued an SRO in this regard.
The deposed Sheikh Hasina government in the last budget allowed black money to be whitened by buying immovable assets, including land, flats and plots, along with cash by paying 15 percent tax.
The decision to cancel the facility was taken at the Advisory Council of the interim government last week.
In continuation of this, the NBR officially canceled the opportunity to whiten black money.
This opportunity was given by the previous government for one year from July 1 to June 30, 2025. There was an opportunity to whiten the cash earned through bribery and corruption by paying 15 percent tax.
On August 25, Finance and Commerce Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed categorically told that the government would not allow anyone for generating black money anymore.
"Our decision is clear, there will be no scope to generate black money anymore," he said while responding to a question after holding a view exchange meeting with the UN Representatives in Bangladesh held at the Economic Relations Division conference room in in the city.
National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan on August 18 has strongly criticized the practice of whitening black money, calling it an “indecent deed” and “totally unacceptable,” during a view exchange meeting with his fellow colleagues.
Almost all governments allowed legalization of black money in the country, but the response was negligible.
According to NBR sources, so far about Tk 47,000 crore has been legalized so far.
However, there was no scope to whiten black money during the 1991-96 tenure of the BNP government.
Lastly, in the financial year 2022-23, the opportunity to bring back the money smuggled from the country was given, but no one took this opportunity. A year later, another opportunity was given to whiten black money.

DU students protest delay in appointments of 2 Pro VCs
A group of Dhaka University (DU) students staged a demonstration today, protesting the government’s indifference and delay in appointing two Pro Vice Chancellors at Dhaka University. The protest took place at the Raju Sculpture on the Dhaka University campus at 3 pm.
Dhaka University halls to be reopened today
The students alleged that President Shahabuddin Ahmed, who is also the Chancellor of the university, has already made the policy decision to appoint the Pro Vice Chancellors. However, they claimed that certain individuals behind the scenes are attempting to destabilize the campus by delaying the appointments and keeping the administration vacant.
The students threatened to escalate their movement if the appointments are not made soon. They submitted a memorandum to the newly appointed Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, expressing their concerns over the delay.
Saifuddin Ahmed appointed new proctor of Dhaka University
The memorandum stated, "As ordinary students of the university, we are deeply concerned about this delay, which has persisted even after the policy decision was made seven days ago. We suspect that there is a political plot or conspiracy behind the delay in issuing the recruitment notification for the nominated teachers, despite their qualifications and acceptance by the students."
The document further asserted, "We believe that the nominations were made based on merit and ability. We trust in their capabilities and experience and hope that no discrimination or injustice will be tolerated in our inclusive country, which has been shaped by the mass uprising and the blood of numerous martyrs."
Rayhan Uddin, a student from the English Department, urged the administration to issue the notification as soon as possible to prevent any attempts by those supporting authoritarianism. He claimed that opposition from a group of university teachers, who allegedly met with the education adviser, might be delaying the appointments.
Gonotran’: Relief drive at Dhaka University mobilizes aid for flood victims
The students also revealed that President Shahabuddin Ahmed decided on August 26 to appoint Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan from the Development Studies Department as Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Dr. Sayema Haque Bidisha from the Economics Department as Pro-VC (Admin), and Dr. Mohammad Ismail from the Applied Chemistry Department as Pro-VC (Academic). They emphasized that the university cannot remain administration-free for much longer.
