Nasim Ahmed, officer-in-charge (OC) of Pabna Police Station, said hundreds of locals brought out a procession in the district town to protest the death of local Awami League Joint General Secretary Bakul Sheikh.
They staged the protest after laying the 35-year-old leader to eternal rest.
Also, the protesters vandalised and torched 20-30 shops and 12 houses in Ananta intersection and Dakkhin Raghabpur area of the district town.
On information, police rushed to the spot and tried to disperse them, triggering a chase and counter-chase.

At one stage, the law enforcers charged baton and fired tear gas to disperse them, leaving twenty-seven people injured.

Five policemen including OC Nasim were injured in the hour-long clash that continued till 4:30pm.
Station Officer of Pabna Fire Service Dulal Miah said three firefighting units rushed to the spot and could put out the blaze around 5pm.

Bakul, a member of Dogachi union Ward 7, was killed by his rival group following an enmity with one Mokhlesur Rahman over extortion on Friday evening.

Additional policemen have been deployed in the area to avert further trouble.
