Intermittent heavy shower and onrush of water from the upstream has been causing rise of water levels in major rivers submerging the low-lying areas and villages of the River banks.

In Lalmonirhat, an eight-month old baby girl drowned in flood water at Goddimari village in Hatibandha upazila.

The deceased was identified as Alifa Akhter, daughter of Anwar Hossain.

Atiar Rahman, chairman of Goddimari union parishad, said that the minor girl slipped into the flood water and drowned early in the morning.

The overall flood situation in Panchagarh, Natore, Kurigram, Sunamganj and Nilphamari districts.

In Kurigram, nearly one lakh people were marooned as water of Brahmaputra, Dharla and Teesta  was flowing above the danger level.

The Brahmaputra River was flowing 67cm above danger mark at Chilmari point and 67cm above at Nunkhawa point and the Dharla river 96cm above in Dharla bridge point on Monday morning while the Teesta River is flowing along the danger line.

As flood water inundated vast areas more than one lakh people in 56 unions of 9 upazilas of the district have been marooned. Many people took shelter on roads and dams as water entered their homes.

Water Development Board officials said initiatives are being taken to prevent erosion by dropping sand-filled geobags at 11 points. 

Kurigram Deputy Commissioner Md Rezaul Karim said boats and speedboats have been kept ready to rescue the stranded people.

Some 438 shelters, including schools and madrasas, have been prepared and police have taken necessary steps to maintain law and order there, he said.

In Panchagarh, a wooden bridge of Karatoya River submerged in Mirgar of Sadar upazila and around 200 families were forced to take shelter in high lands due to the water level rise in Rivers.

More than hundred houses in Limangar, Pourokhalpara, Ramerdanga areas of Municipality were flooded while the locals Water Development Board said that the water of Karatoya River is flowing very close to danger level and can cross it anytime.

In Natore, Atrai river is flowing 24 cm above the danger level at Singra point triggering the flood.

People from 30 villages were suffering greatly as Bakhtarpur-Bairhati road went under water, said locals.

Subrata Kumar Sarkar, Deputy Director of district Agriculture Extension Department said seedlings of paddy were submerged around 40 hectares of areas.
