The total case count reached 80,751,164 while the death toll climbed to 1,764,215 as of today.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the United States topped 19 million on Sunday.

The US COVID-19 case count rose to 19,129,368 , with a total of 333,110 deaths.

With the most cases, 2,123,163, California became the first US state to have more than 2 million cases. Texas reported 1,668,263 cases, followed by Florida with 1,264,588 cases. The states of Illinois and New York both registered more than 900,000 cases.

Other states with over 500,000 cases include Ohio, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Michigan, North Carolina and Wisconsin, the CSSE data showed.

By far, the United States remains the nation worst hit by the pandemic, with the world's most cases and deaths, making up more than 23 percent of the global caseload.

Brazil on Monday registered 18,479 new COVID-19 cases, bringing its national count to 7,484,285, the country's health ministry said.

Meanwhile, 344 more COVID-19 deaths were recorded, raising the death toll to 191,139, it said.

The state of Sao Paulo, the most populous in the country, has been hardest-hit, with 1,426,176 cases and 45,863 deaths, followed by Rio de Janeiro, with 421,069 cases and 24,918 deaths.

The city of Sao Paulo announced over the weekend the prohibition of non-essential activities on Jan. 1-3 to avoid crowds during the New Year holiday.

India’s total Covid-19 cases crossed 10,187,850 while the death toll from the virus mounted to 147,622 as on Monday.

Bangladesh situation

Covid-19 fatalities in Bangladesh surged to 7,452 with 24 more deaths recorded in 24 hours until Sunday morning.

The mortality rate stood at 1.46 percent, the Directorate General of Health Services said.

Besides, 1,049 new cases pushed the caseload to 509,148.

Bangladesh reported its first cases on March 8. The infection number reached the 5,00000-mark on December 20.

The first death was reported on March 18 and the death toll exceeded 7,000 on December 12.

The government has been warning of a second wave of Covid-19 in winter and urging people to properly follow health safety measures. It has adopted a ‘no mask, no service’ policy.
