Elderly man injured over land dispute in Pirojpur; one arrested with firearm
An elderly man was seriously injured and a man was arrested with a firearm following a land boundary dispute in Bhandaria upazila of Pirojpur on Friday morning.
The incident took place around 7:30am in Dhawa village under Dhawa Union No. 5, creating panic in the area.
The injured, Md Almagir Hossain Sardar (65), son of late Abdur Rashid Sardar of the same village, is currently undergoing treatment at Bhandaria Upazila Health Complex.
Police arrested the accused, Md Rofiqul Islam Samrat (60), son of late Md Ali Hawlader of Dhawa village, with a pistol following the incident.
Locals and police said Samrat went to Almagir Sardar’s house over a dispute regarding land boundary, which led to an argument. At one point, Almagir’s grandson Tamim Sardar (15) pushed him, escalating the situation.
Samrat then allegedly fired two blank shots from his pistol (No. FFR-7257), causing panic in the area. When Almagir tried to intervene, Samrat reportedly struck him on the right side of the head with the pistol’s butt, leaving him seriously injured and bleeding.
During a subsequent scuffle, locals managed to detain Samrat and later handed him over to police. The injured was rescued and admitted to hospital by his relatives.
The victim’s daughter Fatema Akter filed a case at Bhandaria Police Station, naming Samrat as the main accused and two others as unidentified accused in an attempted murder case.
Officer-in-Charge of Bhandaria Police Station Dewan Joglul Hasan confirmed the incident, saying the accused has been sent to jail through Pirojpur court. Investigation is ongoing.

Stampede at Narsingdi qulkhani leaves 15 injured
At least 15 people, including a child, were injured in a stampede during a qulkhani (Quran recitation and condolence gathering) in Madhabdi area of Narsingdi Sadar on Friday.
The incident occurred after Friday prayers at Bhogirathpur village when large crowds gathered at the Bhogirathpur Haji Lal Mia Mollah High School field for the religious programme.
Locals said around 8,000 to 10,000 people assembled at the venue. As the school gate was opened after Jummah prayers, attendees rushed inside, triggering a sudden stampede at the entrance.
Among the injured are Abdul Mannan (60), Afaz Uddin (55), Kadir Mia (30), Suman Ahmed (25), Zakaria (15) and Ibrahim (5). The identities of the remaining injured could not be immediately confirmed.
The injured were taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, Madhabdi Prime Hospital and Madhabdi Popular Hospital for treatment. One critically injured patient was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Narsingdi Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Asma Jahan Sarkar said no official permission had been taken for organising the event at the school field. She added that she was not aware of the stampede incident.
Resident Medical Officer of Narsingdi Sadar Hospital Dr Farida Gulshan Ara Kabir said four injured people were admitted to the hospital, and one of them was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

Housewife’s hanging body recovered in Lalmonirhat
Police recovered the hanging body of a housewife from Chowratari area under Sarpukur Union in Aditmari upazila of Lalmonirhat district on Friday afternoon.
The deceased, Moni, was found hanging by a scarf (orna) inside her room after a Messenger conversation with her husband Zulfikar Ali, who works in the railway sector, according to family members.
Family sources said she later ended her life by hanging herself inside the room following the conversation.
Women killed after being hit by truck in Lalmonirhat
Police from Aditmari Police Station reached the spot and recovered the body.
Police said the exact cause of death will be known after investigation. Legal procedures in this regard are underway.

Son held for hacking mother over drug money in Rajbari
A young man was detained after allegedly hacking his mother with a sharp weapon over money for drugs in Goalanda municipality of Rajbari on Thursday night.
The victim, Shikha Rani (40), was critically injured in the attack carried out by her son Gobinda Ghosh (19) at Khudiram Sardar Para area under Ward No. 4.
Locals and police said the incident took place around 3:00 am when Gobinda, reportedly under the influence of drugs, attacked his sleeping mother with a dao (machete-like weapon), leaving her severely wounded.
Youth hacked to death in Rangpur
Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed to the scene and rescued her in a bloodied condition before taking her to Goalanda Upazila Health Complex. As her condition worsened, she was referred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment, where she is now undergoing care in critical condition.
Family sources said the accused had frequent quarrels with his mother over drug-related money.
Police said relatives managed to detain Gobinda inside the house and informed the police. Acting on the information, Goalanda Ghat Police Station SI Md Nasir Uddin, along with a team, recovered a blood-stained dao, hair strands and a blood-soaked bedsheet from the scene and took the accused into custody.
Officer-in-Charge Md Shafiqur Islam said a case has been filed in this connection and the accused was sent to court on Friday.

Van driver beaten to death in Rajshahi
A van driver was allegedly beaten to death following a trivial dispute in Mohanpur upazila of Rajshahi on Friday morning.
The deceased was identified as Alam Ali, 43, son of Md Ashraf, a resident of Belgachhi village in the upazila.
The incident occurred around 8:30 am in front of Pathak Club in the East Para area of Belgachhi.
According to local sources, the accused, Mojibur Rahman, signalled a moving van to stop. However, when the driver stopped the vehicle a short distance ahead, Mojibur became enraged.
At one stage, he allegedly struck Alam several times on the back of the head with a brick.
Alam sustained critical injuries and collapsed on the ground. Locals rushed him to Mohanpur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Following the incident, locals detained the accused at Pathak Club.
When police arrived to take him into custody, an agitated crowd attempted to assault him.
During efforts to control the situation, Assistant Sub-Inspector Belal Uddin and another police member sustained minor injuries.
Additional police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
Second Officer of Mohanpur Police Station, SI Modasser Hossain Khan, said legal action is being taken based on complaints filed over the incident.

Schoolgirl found unconscious in classroom in Kushtia; sexual assault suspected
An 11-year-old schoolgirl was rescued unconscious from a classroom of a school in Mirpur upazila of Kushtia on Thursday night, with doctors suspecting sexual assault.
The Class-VI girl had gone to her Chhatragachha Secondary School earlier in the day to attend a farewell programme for the Secondary School Certificate 2026 batch, according to police and local sources.
As she did not return home after the programme, her family members began searching for her.
They alleged that around 8:00pm, they contacted the school peon, Hamidul, who initially said no one was inside the school and refused to hand over the keys.
Growing suspicious, locals took the keys and entered the building, where they later found the girl unconscious in a room on the 2nd floor.
The victim was first taken to Mirpur Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to the 250-bed Kushtia General Hospital for better treatment. She is currently undergoing treatment in the gynaecology department.
Resident Medical Officer of the hospital Dr Hossain Imam said necessary samples were collected. “Preliminary examination suggests signs of sexual assault,” he said, adding that further tests are underway.
After regaining consciousness, the girl told journalists that she had been sitting near the stairs but could not remember anything beyond that.
Officer-in-Charge of Mirpur Police Station Shahidul Islam said police visited the scene and detained Hamidul and another school employ – Mohsin – on Friday for interrogation.

Bangladeshi killed by Indian Khasi people along Sylhet border
A Bangladeshi young man has been shot to death by members of the Indian Khasi community along the Companiganj border in Sylhet, officials said.
The incident occurred around 8:30pm on Thursday in a betel nut grove along the border.
The deceased was identified as Saleh Ahmed Joydhar, 30, a resident of Karbalar Tuk village in the upazila, according to a press release issued by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Sylhet Battalion-48, signed by its Commanding Officer Lt Col Md Nazmul Haque, Friday.
According to the press release, Saleh, along with two others, had crossed the border into India to bring a consignment of drugs.
They were staying between near a betel nut garden when members of the Khasi community, suspecting them to be betel nut thieves, opened fire with pellet guns, leaving Saleh dead on the spot.
His companions, identified as Suman Mia, 25, of Nazirgaon village, and Masum Ahmed, 20, of Karbalar Tuk village, later carried the body back to Bangladesh.

Youth hacked to death in Rangpur
A young man was hacked to death in Rangpur city on Thursday night, allegedly over drug-related disputes.
The victim was identified as Rakib, 20, son of Abdus Samad of Bairagi Para area.
According to local sources, Rakib had earlier been involved in drug trading with Momin, 42, and a dispute had been ongoing between them for a long time.
Following the conflict, Rakib’s father filed a case at the Kotwali Police Station on November 14 last year against Momin and several others.
Police and locals said on Thursday evening, Momin and his associates found Rakib alone at Machuapara intersection in Tatipara and attacked him with a sharp weapon, slitting his throat before fleeing the spot.
On information, police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, said Officer-in-Charge of the police station Azad Rahman.

Youth kills mother in Khulna
A woman died after her son struck her with a stick in Khan Mohammadpur village in Rupsha upazila in Khulna district on Friday morning.
Victim Mimmi Begum, 44, was the wife of Hamidul Islam of the village. The accused was identified as Nadim Islam, aged around 30.
The incident took place around 8:00am over family feud, said Md Ujjal Hossain, in-charge of Aichgati police camp in the upazila.
He said Nadim attacked his mother with a stick and hit her in the head, leaving her dead on the spot.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to hospital for autopsy. They also arrested Nadim.
However, a group of people tried to snatch him from police while being taken to the camp, prompting additional force to rush in to take the situation under control.

BGB destroys contraband items worth over Tk 31.34 crore in Kushtia
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Thursday destroyed a massive consignment of drugs valued at over Tk 31.34 crore in Kushtia, officials said.
The destruction took place at the “Drug Destruction Ceremony-2026” held at the Kushtia Battalion headquarters. Brigadier General Mahmudul Hasan, Jessore Region Commander, attended the event as the chief guest.
Colonel Mohammad Iftekhar Hossain, Kushtia Sector Commander, welcomed the attendees. In his speech, Brigadier General Hasan reiterated BGB’s firm commitment to building a drug-free Bangladesh and said the force is working tirelessly along the border under a “zero-tolerance” policy to prevent drug trafficking.
He emphasized that drug abuse is a complex social problem requiring participation from all levels of society and called for increased public awareness and community-based prevention measures. The chief guest also praised the skills, dedication, and professionalism of BGB personnel before inaugurating the drug destruction operation.
Between Feb 1, 2025, and Mar 15, 2026, BGB operations in Kushtia and Meherpur districts led to the seizure of drugs and other smuggled items worth approximately Tk 114.80 crore, involving 175 suspects.
The destroyed items included 4,432 bottles of foreign liquor, 12 liters of local liquor, 7,787 bottles of Phensedyl, 550.4 kg of cannabis, 26.253 kg of heroin, 6.05 kg of cocaine, 67,496 yaba tablets, 10,137 Viagra tablets, 97,656 sildenafil tablets, 155,909 packets of bidi, 30 bottles of LSD, 1,476 Indian capsules, and 2,299 Indian injections. The total estimated value was Tk 31.34 crore.
Officials said BGB regularly recovers life-threatening drugs including yaba and conducts such destruction drives with public oversight to strengthen social resistance against narcotics.
The ceremony was attended by Kushtia Deputy Commissioner, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Additional Superintendent of Police, other civil administration officials, and journalists from print and electronic media.
